Tweaking A Chair Kit

Hello Friends and Happy Thanksgiving! Those of us who live in the US celebrate all the things we have to be grateful for on this day every year, though it is good to keep gratitude in our hearts at all times, wherever in the world we are. I am grateful to have had a fabulous visit with my amazingly wonderful folks in Arizona.  Since I've been home I have done my best to pick up where I left off with the trunkhouse, and that was in the parlor.

In this post I'll share a few details about the chairs I made.  While it is not a real tutorial, hopefully it helps you to imagine ways to think beyond the instructions for some of the old favorite mini kits you have lying around. It can be so much fun to make something unique and totally your own, even when it's not totally from scratch.

I started with a couple House Of Miniatures Chippendale Wing Chair kits. Then I looked online for wing chair styles that I liked and could adapt the kits to. Here's the chair I wanted to mimic...

My inspiration chair had a much slighter profile, so I needed to cut the kit's winged side pieces in depth and height.

I also rounded the detail at the top.

The kit's cardstock pieces also needed to be reshaped. The most important step here was to keep dry fitting to see how everything was fitting together.

My inspiration chair was also different in that it had rolled arm rests, where the kit had rolled front/sides and flat arm rests. I moved those rolled kit pieces to the tops of my arm rests, after I trimmed the little lip pieces away. They were intended to secure the cardstock sides in the original kit configuration so I no longer needed them.

I altered the cardstock further to accommodate the rolled arm rests once they were glued on.

The next few steps pretty much followed the kit's instructions, applying a strip of fabric to the edge of the sides, applying it to the cardstock, then applying those pieces to the side pieces.

I encountered my first real challenge when it was time to upholster the chair cushions. One of my kits was fairly new and one of them was really old. The chair cushion pieces from the older kit (which are made from some type of foam) were shriveled, brittle and crumbled in my fingers. My solution was to eliminate them from both kits and use batting, instead.

Left, newer kit foam. Right, older it foam.

Two layers of quilt batting.

Time for fabric...

And cardstock...

All the components are ready for assembly per the kit instructions.

The kit's leg assemblies have always looked a bit clunky to me. Plus, given Roz's petite stature, they are a little tall. Instead, I cut down some short spindles to make more height appropriate chair legs.

And I even hand sewed a couple accent pillows! I think my sewing skills are improving... a little. 😊

Roz loves her new custom wingback chairs and can't wait to see them in the parlor! I'm saving that for the big reveal, but there's so much more to do before then. More progress, hopefully, next week, my friends!

Hope this post has inspired you to rework some of your favorite mini kits to make them your own! Thanks for stopping by!

xo xo,

Jodi

  1. Happy Thanks giving Day, dear Jody. You are right, we should be giving thanks every day in our life for everything we have no matter where we live.
The chairs turned out beautiful. Roz looks very happy with them. Thank you for showing step by step how you made them.
    Hugs, Drora

  3. What an improvement you've made to your HoM kit chairs. They not only look better in profile but they are appear to be so comfy and cosy that once seated, Roz may never want to get up!

  4. Thank you so much for this kit bashing "tutorial"! I have some HOM chair kits also, but never thought to adapt them this way, which is much more my style. Can't wait for the big reveal :) Happy Thanksgiving dear Jodi!

    1. Thanks Michelle! I am so glad that your HOM kits will get to be reimagined, too! This is the third or fourth time I have done this with these kits and it never gets old, lol! Roz's parlor is such a small room that a "big" reveal might be promising too much, but it sure seems like there are a lot of little projects to get done. Looks like I am in for a fun December!

    1. Thanks Shannon! We really had a wonderful visit, and we filled up mom and dad's house to bursting! They are wonderful hosts! Glad you like how the chairs turned out! I had a few weeks to dream of the project before I finally got home and got to play minis again!

  7. Hi Jodi! Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you had a great time with family too!
The chairs are so cute! Well done on your "altering" of the design. I have some old HOM sofa kits that I never figured out how to assemble! The "ancient" instructions seemed to assume I would already know a lot about kits... but back then I didn't! And I really didn't like the "firm" foam that was supposed to be the "cushions"! Not cushion-y at all! Perhaps it is time for me to revisit and learn from them! :):)

    1. Hi Betsy and Thanks! We had a super small gathering this year but it was a really nice day just the same!
I think on upholstering I have learned more from following Kris Compass' tutorials than any furniture kits. Once I knew the basic process for the pieces, adapting them to various kits was possible. She uses layered batting instead of the foam, and they come out looking very realistic and like something you'd actually enjoy sitting on. I think you'll have fun with your sofa kit, and maybe if you make Kris' chair at the same time you can adapt the concepts for a more unique HOM sofa!

  8. A very belated Happy Thanksgiving, it's so nice to see you back in the groove! I do hope the R&R with your folks will mean there will be lots of new and exciting things for you to inspire us with.
Love what you have done with the chairs Jodi, I can see Roz is over the moon with them and so she should be, they are very pretty. The tip with the legs has me thinking I should do the same with the settee and chair that belongs in Holly's cottage. I used wooden beads I had on hand, but they really are much too chunky for my liking.
    Big hugs,
    X

    1. Thanks Sandi! I, too, am running behind in everything and trying my best to get caught up! Getting to see my folks was so wonderful, but I did miss my creative time. I realized when I got home that I started the treehouse project a year ago and it has left me feeling an urgency to get these poor characters a functional home!
Roz's parlor is making progress, but I also realized that when Russ works close to home and comes home every night, my mini productivity plummets. If I want to get anything done I am going to have to devise a scheme to get him a job farther away from home, lol! 😛

    2. I know what you mean, I always look forward to the times when hubby is on his fortnight jolly, playing with his man toys on our property. This time however, it's going too quick. I'm almost hoping he'll stay up there a bit longer so I can finish cleaning up the studio and move onto the 1:12 house. 😄

    1. Thanks Michelle! Russ got me a real life wing chair for Mother's Day this year, and it is purple, too! It's a lot of fun to pick the furniture you like and not because it matches all the other furniture!

  10. Oh, what a wonderful post! ;O) The chairs turned out awesome and apart from being drop-dead-beautiful they promise to be super-cozy (I would really suppose wikipedia is going to add a photo of Roz's chairs now to explain "coziness"... *smile*) And thanks also for the inspiration to turn kits into something unique and to make them fit to your needs... or the size of a fairy beary godmother.

I only foresee one trouble now... Roz will have a hard time in making decisions: Should I enjoy my cup of tea and my good book in the very pretty, comfy, cozy chair in the parlor or in the very pretty, comfy, cozy chair in my bedroom. Decisions... always so many decisions!!! *LOL* My, I bet Roz will find a solution for that... perhaps with a little lottery spell like this, perhaps with a tiny gnome announcer: "And today's winner of "The comfy place of the day" is... - drumroll please - the parlor!!! Woohooooo!!! Hey, don't be sad, bedroom... perhaps you are the chosen one when tomorrow it's time for another round of "The comfy place of the daaaaaayyyyyy"!!!!!!!"

Wonderful work - and I'm really glad to hear you've had a great time with your folks. And although Thanksgiving is over and we don't celebrate it in my country I would still give thanks to you for always making my day with every new post of yours.

    Hugs
    Birgit

    1. Thanks Birgit! I am so happy that you like Roz's parlor chairs! I'm just glad that I was able to provide a nice place for her to sit no matter which room she happens to be in at any moment! I love your gnome announcer idea! I was just looking at how gnomes are made on YouTube...

Your comment just had to be confirmed as "Not Spam" in my comments interface. Not sure why Blogger randomly does this (but hardly ever catches Real spam) but at least we now know why and have the solution.

Hope your Not To Be Mentioned Day preparations are going wonderfully this year and that you are allowing for some fun! I know this time of year is especially filled with missing your folks so it is hard to navigate between the joy and the longing. Big Hugs, my friend!!!

  12. Holy smokes! something must have went wrong because somehow I did not register missing several posts on your blog, Jodi! I'm sorry for that. Lets make up for those lost comments.

I agree heartily. Even if it is not scratch built one should still be proud of the result. because that is of your own making. You know I use kits too to make something else out of them. In my mind it is the effort put into it and the result you get out of it that counts.

That being said, I love how the chairs turned out. They look very comfy and suit the theme of the house very well!

    1. Hi Huibrecht! It is lovely to see you here! No bad feels about missing several posts - I know how simple it is for life to grab hold of you and take you in the opposite direction! I, too, am struggling to catch up on blogs and a whole lot of other important life stuff.

Thanks for your support about personalizing kits! Semi homemade isn't cheating - it's ingenious, right? Why reinvent the wheel? I'm glad you like the chairs and I hope you'll like how they work in the parlor. The trunkhouse is almost finished inside!
