Fit For A Queen

Or, more accurately, a Fairy Beary Godmother. What I'm talking about is Roz's bed. As you know, Roz falls perfectly into twelfth scale, though at just 4" tall, she's at the petit end of the bell curve. In addition, her trunkhouse, having been custom designed for her, is also what the realtors like to call cozy. So, when it came to making the perfect bed for her, I had to think a little outside the scale.

Roz's Bedroom is just 9-1/4" in diameter.

I started off with a House Of Miniatures Chippendale Canopy Bed kit. If assembled as intended, it would have taken up nearly the entire floor space of the bedroom.

This meant that I'd need to make adjustments which allowed me to engage in my favorite aspect of mini kits: Customization! After measuring what the perfect width of a bed would be for the room, I found the center of the headboard piece and measured half that amount out from each side.

Then I cut off the excess and carved the bedpost notches back into the new headboard. I still really loved the curved shape, even after losing the "wings".

Then came the complicated part. Here's where tenacity really pays off. After determining the perfect length for Roz and the room, I had to figure out which kit pieces needed to be cut for both the length and the new width. My advice for anyone attempting this is get plenty of sleep the night before, work in a silent environment, measure and visualize several times and don't go anywhere near a saw until you're CERTAIN about what you're doing. Luckily, I heeded my own advice and everything went well. 😊

The new configuration measures 4-3/4" L x 3-1/4" W x 6-3/4" H. It fits Roz comfortably and leaves plenty of "living space" in the bedroom. Hooray!

The kit calls for making incremental holes in the frame to string "rope" through to support the mattress. Once I'd drilled the holes for the smaller frame, I realized I could just use a couple pieces of the leftover wood scraps to make cross braces instead of a complicated stringing process.

Here is what the viewer will see looking in through the trunk's opening.

The next step was to make Roz a super plush mattress. Considering the amount of headboard that I wanted to show above the mattress, I determined a good thickness was two layers of 3/16" foam core. Then a layer of Thermolam, and on top of that, a layer of quilt batting. Before gluing the layers to the foam core, I pre-drilled a series of holes for later tufting.

Next I covered the mattress with a very fun ticking type fabric. Purple stripes and hearts? It couldn't be more fit for Roz!

After sewing the tufts in, I made a bottom cover with fabric covered cardstock. I don't know if anyone will ever look under the bed, but if they did and saw a bunch of thread and knots, I'd be mortified!!!

The only thing left to do was to create a boxing strip (to wrap around the mattress) with more cardstock and fabric. I love the finished look and am suddenly craving a nap!

The final test was to check the mattress on the bed. A great fit with room for bedding!

You can see the beginnings of adornments being added to the bed frame, as well.

For efficiency's sake, I made Alice and Goldie's mattresses while I had all of the mattress making supplies out. Wayne and Rozario will get theirs made at the same time, too (soon), but with a more masculine fabric.

Every time I look at this unfinished floor I feel badly! Soon girls, I promise!

Once the mattresses were finished, I could focus on the adornments for Roz's bed. I may have had to skimp on size, but I could still load up on regal detailing. I added lots of Dresden trims, pearl half beads and Roz's initial. Then I painted a base coat of warm white.

I could have stopped right here and it would have been a beautiful bed. But not quite fit for a queen (or a Fairy Beary Godmother). But because this post is already long, and has (I am sure) eaten up much of your blog reading budget, I'll leave you with a... To Be Continued...

BUT... Before I go... I have one last event to share that is sure to make you feel the warm fuzzies that are pervasive in our mini community...

Many of you know and follow Sheila's wonderfully creative blog, Shenandoah And Stuff. This week I was surprised by the loveliest note of encouragement and unique gifts from Sheila. She crafted a beautifully embellished set of china for Roz! There is a serving platter, a pitcher, a large bowl, dinner plates, dessert plates and cups with saucers. Wow! What a thoughtful gift! She intended to give them to Roz for her kitchen, but after seeing the delicately petaled floral spray which was hand appliqued on these pieces, Goldie insisted that they belong to her! Boy, that Goldie has no qualms about stating her opinion! Roz, seeing Goldie's delight, and having everything she needs, couldn't argue. Here are the gorgeous dishes which will soon be adorning Goldie's open kitchen shelving. Aren't they delightful?!?

Thanks so much, Sheila, for sharing your encouragement, creativity and talents with me and the gang! 💗 The china is so adorable and will add a wonderfully unique charm and warmth to Goldie's kitchen!

More sets are coming soon to Sheila's Etsy Shop

Until next time, my friends, find ways to share your talents, inspire others and spread the mini love!

xo xo,

Jodi

  1. Without doing all the complicate calculations, I suspect that you turned a double-sized bed into a twin sized--sort of, close enough. The bed is perfect and so lovely. This is probably one of the most efficient mattress tutorials that I've seen yet. I like to use the foam core as the base because it gives a very sturdy foundation and retains its shape. Well done.

    1. Thanks AnnI I suspect the bed would end up close to 1:16 scale though I have never looked up the conversions. I am glad you like the way it turned out. I like foam core, too, and I hear many of the spongy foam beds that used to be common (and that came in this kit) have crumbled over time. How awful when you work so hard to make something beautiful!

  3. Hi Jodi. The new bed looks fit for the most discerning beary godmother and is so pretty. Also nice to see Goldie and Alice’s bed nooks again, as they are so pretty. And the new china really is pretty and so fresh, ready for get togethers soon!

    1. Thanks Shannon! I am having a lot of fun making Roz's bed, though much of it is a learn as I go struggle. And I am having to drag out the dreaded sewing machine!!! Sheila's dishes are just so pretty! Perfect for the fairytale vibe of this project!

  4. Love the bed Jodi and how your mattresses turned out, just gorgeous! The gang should be very happy to sleep on them, heck if I was that tiny I'd be thrilled. :)
What a pretty set of kitchen tableware, I can see why Goldie snapped it up. Sheila is very talented.

    2. Do you remember telling me my kids need a bedroom? Well it's underway. As space is at a premium, I've decided to make a bunk bed with a trundle and thanks to you they'll have great mattresses too!

    1. Thanks Michelle! It was a lot of fun to make the mattresses! Too bad they will be all covered up at some point, lol! I am gearing up to drag the sewing machine down off the shelf. That is going to present a real challenge for my lack of skill, but darn it, I am going to keep trying until the thought of sewing doesn't make me queasy any longer! I should just dive into the deep end and take a quilting class, but I'm too chicken!!!
Sheila's gifts are wonderful! And so is she!

  6. The mattresses are so pretty...it seems a shame to cover them up with sheets when they match the beams so well! But with magic there won't be any of that pesky pushing and pulling and messing about with the mattresses and sheets in their little bed nooks.
I'm with you on the foam core mattresses. They last longer and it's much easier to make them to size in my opinion.
But the bed! Its gorgeous! And all those embellishments and carvings make it even more of a fairy tale.
I love how the dishes look on the shelves! Roz is such a generous sweetheart of a Beary Godmother.

    1. It is so sad to cover them up, Sheila, but at least when it's time for a bedding change I won't have the embarrassing ugly mattress shame, lol! I want so much to make fitted sheets with elastic and I am hoping it doesn't turn into a huge waste of time and material!!!
I'm so glad you like Roz's bed, and she thinks you're pretty special, too! 💗

  10. Oh what a wonderful post! ;O) And around here we're all in awe with Roz's bed which is in fact worth to be a Queen's bed... or the perfect place for a Fairy Beary Godmother to have the sweetest dreams.

However there was one single opinion around here that this bed would also be worthy to become a flower beary's dream bed and Miss X pointed out that the initial would already fit to her needs. Luckily I did not have to find a reply to this as Miss X's big brother reminded her at once that this canopy bed would never fit into Flower Cottage. Miss X laughed and said she was going to ask her boyfriend to cast a spell making either the bed fit into her house or the house big enough to fit for the bed while I was starting to wonder what I made wrong over the years when raising those furry folks. But then Miss X smiled at me, put her paw on my hand and declared she was only teasing me and that she was and still is the proud and happy owner of the most lovely bed a pink loving flower beary ever posessed - but if something would ever happen to her bed she might have a talk with Roz. Oh, my poor nerves... it's not always that easy with BiWuBearies in the house... *LOL*

But without any more BiWuBeary humour... the bed turned out stunning and the mattress promises loads of comfort just by its looks. I also loved to see the ones you made for the girls - it's always a pleasure to see their beautiful sleeping places again. I'm already curious to see the "masculine" versions for Wayne and Rozario (and I'm somehow afraid if Rozario's might get a few burnt marks when time passes, you must know, it can be a bit risky for the envrionment when dragons dream... *grin*)

And the set of china from Sheila is such a beautiful and of course very generous gift. It made me smile that Goldie had her hands on it at once... (and I admit it... it's a relief that not only my bearies show *ehem* tiny glimpses of greed).

    Hugs

    1. Thanks Birgit! I am so happy that you enjoyed this week's recap of progress on the tree and trunk houses! Though I am so sorry to have been the cause of an outburst of jealousy from Rosey! You handled it very well, letting her express her feelings and guiding her back to appreciating her own blessings like the delightful bed she gets to sleep in every nigh in her very own gorgeous Rose Cottage! Excellent parenting eventually leads our "children" safely back to self correction. 😊

I am so happy that you like all the girls' beds, and I hope that tomorrow, when the new post comes out, you will be pleased with the beds that I have made for the boys. With all that work accomplished, this weekend I will endeavor to provide them all with warm and cozy bedding. Having places to sleep will be such a huge milestone!

Oh yes! Goldie has traits we're working on, too. The lovely dishes caused quite a stir! While it is good to see young ladies advocating for themselves, there are still opportunities to teach temperance. Sheila has demonstrated generosity and kindness, something we all need to be reminded of!

      Hugs!
