If You Give A Mouse A Kitchen...

They'll bake you delicious cheese muffins and bread!

Vera In Her New Kitchen

Virgil In His New Kitchen

But how did these kitchens come about? Well let me tell you...

Each kitchen began as a simple plywood pop out. What better way in a compact cottage? Both Vera and Virgil don't need much. Not even a fridge, really, as they enjoy their cheese room temperature or cooked into delicious dishes. So a small stove and cooktop, a roomy farmhouse sink, a little counter space, some modest storage and a few open shelves will do.

They began as many of my projects do, in Cricut Design Space. Using measurements from a quick sketch on graph paper, I made up the kitchen's components using shapes. Employing the ease of faux drawers and doors, I made a simple front panel and support pieces, drawer and door fronts and framing, and an oven front panel with door, drawer and control panel. These were cut by the Maker from 2mm Cricut chipboard. The countertops were made from 1/8" thick basswood, cut using the mini table saw, as it is slightly thicker and stands up better to stain and faux paint treatments.

I added simple hardware to the cabinets. To the ovens, I added "glass" for the doors, handles and knobs, and before I lost access to the oven interiors, I gave each a special feature: oven lights and delicious cheesy breads being baked. I cut racks for each oven, again with the Maker, and added oven lights using 12 volt screw base bulbs and plastic holders from my stash.

I made the cheesy bread and cheese muffins using Paperclay, and then gave them a baked look by dusting them with chalk pastels in yellow ochre and burnt orange. The glistening egg wash on the breads is yellow label Mod Podge. Simple but effective! You should smell them! Yum!

How about the sinks? Remember a few weeks ago I told you I'd had my first noob blooper on the 3D printer? Talk about being humbled...
I only had to make a simple design in Tinkercad - a straightforward box with a recess and a drain hole, really. That all went fine - I'd done it tens of times for all the stuff in my Shapeways store. Bringing it into the 3D printer's slicer program even went off without a hitch. Using the sample roll of red PLA that came with the printer, it was successful the very first time!

Two versions, testing wall thickness

Test fit success

Then look what happened when I attempted to print it in white...

That's Not Good!

Perplexed, I pulled out the packaging. To my shock, it was something called PETG, not the PLA I thought I'd ordered. I was about to learn something new. Well, a couple things, actually.

1. Amazon searches don't always yield the results you expect. It may include things you did not intend. Buyer beware, read all of the info, especially when you're a newbie using a product with lots of technical information. I did not read far enough, and inadvertently ordered the wrong stuff.

2. Aside from PLA and ABS, there is another filament that 3D printers use called PETG. It looks very much like PLA, and will come up in Amazon searches when you type "PLA". But it's properties are very different than PLA. When you begin to learn to use a 3D printer you will have to learn new terms such as "squish" and "skirt" and also know what temperatures both the extruder and the print bed have to be. It is specific for each type of filament you are using. PETG requires a MUCH higher temp, and when it is not set in the slicer program, the filament will not adhere to the bed, or itself. If you use PLA settings for PETG, you will get the results you see pictured above. Who knew? I know now!!!

Two Prime shipping days later, I had the real white PLA and the results were much, much better! Ta-Da! Farmhouse sinks for Vera and Virgil!!!

Four sinks in comparison

Successful white PLA farmhouse sink!

Now back to the good stuff... I made Virgil's countertop in faux butcher block by scribing boards into the wood with a stylus tool. Vera's is a type of solid stone made by using two yellow tones of paint, one creamy white and some acrylic glaze pounced on with a paintbrush. The tiles were made using illustration art board cut with the Maker. They were painted, glazed and left chunky and rustic - perfect for mice cottages. The corner shelves were made with illustration art board, too. The bottom ones have hanging pegs which are so useful in compact kitchens.

You can see that the light fixtures for this end of the cottages have been added. In addition to the oven light, there's an overhead light above the sinks and on either side of the kitchen, sconces. I made mat board plaques for the back of each sconce to add another layer of detail.

And with all of the lights on...

Vera and Virgil are thrilled with their new kitchens and couldn't wait to try them out! They are looking forward to move in day when they'll get to equip them with everything a mouse needs for cooking and baking. Vera is busy making curtains and aprons, and Virgil has begun to plot out the vegetable garden.

And here are the cottages side by side without the second floor and roof. Good thing we're expecting sunny weather in the work room!

After much discussion, the three of us think the next thing to tackle will be the fireplaces. Then the ceiling/second floor can be installed. After that the foundations, then I can attach the structures to the bases. Once that major portion of construction is completed we can discuss second floor ceilings, more lighting fixtures, porch floors and roofing. So, lots of exciting work ahead and many more decisions!

I hope you like the kitchens, too, and are inspired to build something nice for some critters you know!

xo xo,
Jodi

    1. Thanks Sheila! A Maker in your creative hands would be magical! There is a good bit of stuff to learn, but the way you take challenges head on, you'll have it mastered very quickly! And I am here to help, too, so... What ya waitin' for? ;O)

    3. 😊😉😉 Your gut will tell you when it's the right time! If you do order, be sure to get the knife blade with housing, 2mm chipboard, 1mm basswood, kraft board and some extra mats. The variety pack of mats with all three sticky levels is good to have. In addition, from a seller other than Cricut (like Amazon), get solid core mat board (hard to find these days), .75" masking tape and some cheap liquid super glue. That's all I can think of but if you have questions, just shoot me an email!

  2. The kitchens are perfect, and obviously just right for baking cheesy treats! Since I am human, I appreciated all the “how-to” information. Wow! Your Cricut process, the good bad and he ugly of your 3D printing experience, and even a tip on adding an oven light. Thanks a bunch – I can’t wait for your next update.

  5. Those little kitchens are just adorable! Alike and yet subtly different for each mouse. My favorite parts are the ovens that light and have cheesy bread/muffins inside! I'm sorry you had such problems with your sinks. I know about Amazon suggesting products that are clearly not what you searched for. 😠 Glad that they turned out all right in the end. Virgil and Vera will have such fun in their kitchens!

    1. Thanks Deb! It's a lot of fun to get to do two color themes and slightly different finishes side by side. I am still not quite sure the direction I am heading, whether to add washes to bring out details etc., so I am leaving things pretty generic until I decide. Don't know where they'll end up but it'll be fun whatever happens to get there!

  6. Your knowledge of all the different products amazes me, but it's what makes your work so wonderful. Your attention to detail also makes your work so much fun to watch. The mouse pair must be thrilled their new homes. I'm sure they are anxious for the official move in day. Isn't the Maker amazing? I'm loving mine.

    1. Thanks Ann! I mean to do a comparison in a post of all of the materials I have used so far with the Maker, compare them and give sources for each. It has been hard to get the actual Cricut supplies since the Covid situation began, lots of OUT OF STOCK, so I have branched out to try similar materials from other sources. I hope it will be helpful!

  7. Your machinery park did fantastic work again, Jodi, but the genius in this all is you , because you have to think it out how to program these and how they work ;O)! What a disaster if you don't know much about 3D printing machines, such as the difference in the filaments, such as PETG and PLA, how great you finally found out what filament to use. The sinks came out lovely, they fit perfect in the cosy and warm kitchens of Vera and Virgil. The oven lights, the muffins, the bread....I loved every detail you made for these kitchens, everything looks wonderful.
Stay safe, take care, dear Jodi!

    1. Thanks Ilona! I am happy that you like where the kitchens are heading! It is intimidating at first to branch out into new technology because there is so much to learn. But I find if you are willing to invest the time, make mistakes and keep trying, it is very worthwhile. And if I can help my readers avoid some of the pitfalls it is even more so! I find there are a lot of generous folks sharing How To videos, and while they may not always be specific to miniatures, you still glean valuable insights into to how to use software, methods and materials just by being willing to watch and learn.

  8. Mice after my own heart - get the kitchens sorted first. Just this week I have had my single oven replaced with a double oven and like Vera and Virgil I had to cook in both ovens immediately even though there was nothing we needed. If only I had thought of cheesy bread and cheesy muffins. Each step of the way is a delight to see but I am so glad I am not the one doing battle with a 3D printer. I am not sure I can even learn the language required let alone know what all the acronyms stand for; that's before I even flick a switch. I am a bit worried about your pegs being over the cook-top - I hope non inflammables are being hung there. 😊

    1. I like your order of importance, too, Marilyn! The kitchen is the heart of the home and we all need to eat so better get that settled first! Congratulations on your new double ovens!!! If we were ever to upgrade the kitchen that would be the first upgrade for us, too!!! How many time have I wished I had them!
As for you and a 3D printer...If you had the aim to, you'd have it mastered in record time. All you'd need is the belief that it would be really useful to have and some ideas about what you wanted to make. You're one smart cookie and there's no use trying to fain false modesty, lol!
And rest assured about the pegs. In my miniature fantasy world, unless I create a firehouse and little mice firemen, there is no such thing as a house fire. It just can't happen! ;O)

    2. Oh to live in mini world where all is safe..... well I guess that's pretty much what we already do.😉 Honestly Jodi UK ovens are stupid small. I split my life between US and here for many years and LOVED the ovens and fridges - ours feel 'mean' in comparison. there is much I miss. So happy Vera dn Virgil got proper sized ovens and lovely (wash a big pot) sink.

They look like they just came out of a storybook but they also look perfect to make anybody a terrific cook. I can almost smell the goodies!!! I appreciate you walking us through all the building and thinking process, I learn so much from it. But something that cannot be taught or show how to, is to have the perfect eye and mind to know what are the right colours ans little details that make a room memorable. You have that in abundance my dear Jodi.

I was dusting the New Orleans dollhouse the other day and remembering what a challenge it was to get that modern kitchen just perfect. I enjoyed it very much, but it was stressful! It is so nice to work in a style where a little imperfection only adds to the cute quirkiness. It really allows you to flow with the organic process of creating and enjoy without judgement! It's exactly the right kind of project to help you stay calm when the world is so crazy around us!

  21. Phew, I'm very late this time... RL was not kind to me lately, the more I appreciate reading this kind of posts... posts only you can do. Full of eye candy, amazing how-to's and best of all food for the soul.

Once more the dreamteam Jodi-Cricut rocked these kitchen constructions! I'm in awe with everything - and especially the details like for example the lights in the oven, the pegs under the shelf (for sure a must have), the colors, the fact that everything is perfectly mirrored... Wonderful, wonderful work in a wonderful post! (No, I did not forget to mention this... *grin*)

But I'm sorry that there's still some team building necessary between you and your new 3D printer. What a pity that you had to find out about the difference in filaments the very hard way. But as they say - you live, you learn... and something like this will never happen to you again. So here's to two beautiful mouse cottage kitchens! Vera and Virgil are the happiest mice ever... but it makes me still grin that you're now experiencing the effect of tiny voices wanting to discuss this and asking for that. *LOL* Btw - my tiny voices around here were surprised that Virgil went for bread and not for cheesecake... it's not always that easy with BiWuBearies in the house. *grin* And I've noticed well that Vera is busy with sewing and Virgil is preparing a garden... hooray... I'm so looking forward to see more! But for now I'm looking forward to see the fireplaces... and what you, your machine park and your mouse crew will do next.

    Hugs

I just LOVE these little mouse houses and now they have incredible Well Lit tiny Galley kitchens with goodies baking in the ovens!!! My oh my, you are amazing!!! (I still have not finished most of the kitchens in ALL my dollhouses!!!) LOL! (The Tree House and Castle excepted!) I need to take a page from your book and just make them from mat board and to heck with hinges... Right? (Except, I know I would miss the hinges.... and that always gets complicated! LOL!) But truly, you work wonders with your new 3D printer... learning curves do happen and you mastered this one! I love that the kitchens are so similar and so different... placement and design of the equipment makes such a difference! Well done! I look forward to seeing what's next on the "menu"!!! :):)

Like all of your amazingly detailed minis, they will be created with love and truly be mini replicas of real life!
As for the 3D printer, it's been going constantly this week. I am learning what works and what's not so good, only on mini octopus' for Natasha's birthday and not really miniatures. I did sneak in a little sewing machine prototype! I am hopeful!
