Virgil's Turn

Last week I was able to share the progress on Vera's cottage and was hopeful to get Virgil's cottage just as far. Great News! I did it!!!

Here's where I had left off on Virgil's cottage before turning my attention to Vera's. With all of the major structural changes completed, and with the priming done, I was looking forward to starting the interior and exterior wall finishes. It's the exact same layout of Vera's cottage, only mirrored.

Virgil's Cottage - Pop Outs and Dormers Added

Because new grooves had to be cut into the base for mirroring, and because a new lower groove was added to each side wall (in order to lower the second floor for more head room), the old grooves had to be filled in. Strips of 1/8" x 3/8" basswood were almost a perfect fit. A little glue and a tap or two with a hammer worked like a charm!

Primed and all but one floor groove filled in.

Like Vera's cottage, I used papers from the Oopsy Daisy wallpaper line for Virgil, too - only I went with blue patterns for him. I just love a good gingham and this blue one is adorable! It conveys a relaxed and casual home while the paisley paper seems fit for a gentleman. It elevates the cottage just enough without being fussy. So far, I haven't decided to use the daisy borders in either cottage, but I am keeping the option open. It might work well incorporated onto the furnishings, somehow.

I used a combination of basswood and moldings cut by hand, and mat board cut with the Cricut Maker for the trims on the interior and the exterior. I love the way it all came together, just a little country home to comfortably house a simple country mouse.

I can't finish the trim around the fireplace wall until I get the fireplace finished. I was able to design and cut a unique version for each cottage using Inkscape and the Maker. I hope to have a tutorial in an upcoming post with svg files to share.

I have such a hard time trusting my instincts when it comes to blue paint. I love blue, but it is the one hue that I change my mind on the most. One minute I love how a particular shade is reading, the next I wonder what on Earth I was thinking! That is why I made up the swatch board, hoping it would provide me with some certainty. It didn't stop me from feeling uneasy about my choices all the way through the trim work. I kept telling Russ that I was feeling uneasy about the dark stripes and may have to repaint every detail again. It wasn't until I had all of the paper up, trims on, exterior cladding on and the structure in a test fit that I decided that I really liked the look. Phew!

Here are the pop outs, inside and out. What do you think? The cottage now reminds me of striped pajamas, and to me, that is perfect for a gentle country mouse. I love it!

The next task, and one which I was very much looking forward to after all of that trim work, was the wood flooring. Like Vera's cottage, I used Houseworks Southern Pine flooring. But this time, I stained them in Early American instead of Cherry. It's a little bit warmer and richer, but not too dark for the airy sky blue walls. I used Quick Grip adhesive and was able to position the seams in the back where they will mostly be hidden under the kitchen unit.

Final fit after trimming and glue.

Second Floor Before Stain

And with stain and several layers of Polyurethane.

And the exterior in test fit. As planned with Vera's cottage, I will likely use clapboard siding on the main body. But that's a few steps ahead yet. And this fitting does not include the porch roofs. They'll be one of the final steps.

Now, both Vera and Virgil's cottages are up to the same point in their construction. They are both very happy with the progress and are starting to share ideas with me about the type of furnishings and decor they'd like me to make for them. They sure sound excited!

The next phase will be the electricity, and I'm thinking I'll work on both cottages at the same time. I envision eight to twelve round wire fixtures in each cottage. The wires will be running under the foundation, out the walls, out the roof and meeting at a hub under the house. That means very soon I will have to make decisions about the type of foundation materials I will use. Brick? Rock? Concrete? I just need to make some mock ups and get them on the cottages before I decide. I also have yet to run channels and paper the ceilings. Lots of fun tasks to come and l hope they all go smoothly! But then, we all know how wiring goes, right?!? :O)

Hope your projects are progressing nicely, and I hope to be back soon with more to share on the cottages!

xo xo,
Jodi

  3. You know, when they get married, you are going to have to make some sort of breeze way to connect the two houses??? ;)

    1. Oh Carrie it is funny that you mention that! In the very early ideas for this project, I had drawn two side by side stone cottages with a second story bridge connecting them. I imagined them meeting each evening before bed to hold hands and look at the stars together. When the Lisa's kits became available again, the plans morphed but I still might do a bridge in the garden between the two cottages. It depends on how big I get to make the landscape board. 💗

  4. Congratulations on meeting your goal. The color scheme is perfect for Virgil. In fact, they both look nice in the house, which is good because I’m sure Virgil will be asking Vera over for dinner once it is complete.

    1. Thanks Sherrill! It felt like I would never be finished with all of the trim work, cutting, sanding and painting but thanks to persistence (and a zen like focus) I reached a good stopping point to make a blog post!
Vera and Virgil's tastes complement one another very well and though they have different life experience and tastes, they enjoy sharing their interests and supporting them in one another. They both enjoy cooking so will take turns hosting one another each evening.

  7. I LOVE this striped pajamas country house for mouse Virgil, Jodi, it's perfect for a gentleman mousie! But to be honest I am a huge fan of blue, so that did it for me too ;o)! So I think Virigl will be over the moon when he sees his future dream castle. What to think of that gorgeous floor, even the floor is surely male enough for Virgil hehe.
Vera and Virgil are very lucky little mice, for having you as their spiritual Mom, Jodi, you know exactly how to spoil them AND for creating the most perfect homes, eh pardon me, castles for them ;O)!
I also had the same thought as Carrie, what will they do when they fall in love..? I guess that than both will be happy to have a home of their own, so they can take a sort of "time out" when it will be a bit too much ;O)!? But you can also make a 'fake' door inside of each cottage...
Stay safe, take care, dear Jodi.
    Hugs, Ilona

    1. Thank you, Ilona! I am so happy that you like the blue theme for Virgil! Their "castles" will be compact with only the essentials for living, but mice are smart and like to keep life simple. :O) But for the things they do have I'll do my best to make them packed with charming detail!
Living together is not all it's cracked up to be. I think you are like me and have been married for a very long time. Did you ever fantasize about having your own little cottage to live in by yourself? Everything stays exactly where you put it and if you are a tidy person it is easy to keep clean? The arrangement that Vera and Virgil have will keep them peacefully cohesive for many, many years!!! 💗

  9. I love this blue and the gingham! Brings back wonderful memories of my grandmother's kitchen. She had blue gingham wallpaper.

The floors turned out so cool looking! I really love the variations, it reminds me a bit of zebra wood? Warm and exotic both.

For such pretty country cottages, some old block stone foundations? In grey and beige-ish cream and tans? A combination would go nicely with the yellow and the blue and would link the cottages together.

    1. Thanks Sheila! I am glad that the gingham in Virgil's cottage brought back wonderful memories of your grandma's kitchen! My gram had rooster wallpaper, but I know exactly where that hits your heart! 💗
I'm also glad you like the floor! That Southern Pine has some great variations that show up especially well when you stain them!
I like the idea of block stone, like it was quarried out of a granite deposit close by! I might try Paperclay this time, though, instead of egg cartons. We'll see!

  10. Jodi - I want to live in Virgil's cottage!! I am so surprised since I like yellow better than blue but, in this case, I am in love with this little blue wonder. I also really love the bump outs on the two cottages. I think I have one of those kits hidden away somewhere and was planning on a large Dutch dormer on one side to increase the head room but you've given me so many ideas now. First - I have to finish all 5 of my North Pole series projects plus finish all my other partly done projects. Too many projects, not enough time! Big hugs. - Marilyn D.

P.S. I really like Sheila's suggestion of the stone foundations. Although, I know whatever you choose will end up being perfect in the hands of such a talented person!

  11. Your choices of colours are absolutely perfect and how you decide which ones go where is also perfection. I always wonder how you keep on pulling this wonderful stuff out of your hat. I am now convinced that Virgil and Vera are a very modern couple and are already married and dotty about each other but know they simply can't live under the same roof having tried it briefly so they have found two wonderful houses side by side which they can visit and share in perfect harmony. How do these creatures become so real in our heads? Something wonderful about the creatures or just our cracked bonces. Marilyn O (Good luck with the routing the lighting)

  13. Oh my gosh i love it! but i am wondering, are Vergil and Vera brother and sister or boyfriend and girlfriend. Because if they are boyfriend and girlfriend they may want to move in together someday, assuming they are not mormon, are they mormons? Will they buy a new bigger house if they move in together or get married or stay in their own houses so they don't get tired of each other???

    1. Great questions, Janice! Vera and Virgil met while they were each meeting with their builder (me) on the lots they'd purchased. They were so happy to learn that they'd be neighbors, and their friendship was instant! The romance fire has definitely sparked, but they are both very traditional and will take their friendship and relationship very slowly. As for their religious affiliation, like race, gender, and sexual proclivity, I feel that it should be left out of the conversation. For those are the questions that tend to allow us to judge one another rather than just love one another.💗

  17. Oh Jodi!!! I Absolutely Adore what you have done with Virgil's Cottage!!! My Favorite color is "blue"..... so silly that we only have one little name for all those colors!!! LOL! The darker blue is Perfect as a Ground and Accent both... and the complementary blues you chose are just delicious! I had blue gingham curtains on my kitchen windows in my first grownup on my own apartment, and still love the look and feel of breezy gingham! As for the touches of green in the mix... frankly that is Inspired!!! It takes the whole project form "matchy-matchy" to sophisticated-continental-Bohemian-Country! (Not to cast aspersions on Matching decors, you understand!):) The added layers of "garden theme" potential that the green brings in are yummy to contemplate! I am so enjoying this project.... and now I wish I was making little Mouse Cottages too! (Maybe I just need to get back to my Tree House???) I can't wait to see what comes next!!! :):):)

That green (soft apple) was in my drawer sitting next to the blue bottles just begging for a tryout and I immediately loved the pairing, too! Matchy matchy is a trap that us 80's girls often fall into but as we wise up we realize that you've got to have at least one rebel in the mix!
I am totally in a treehouse kind of mood so if you were inspired in that direction I'd be happily on board! Though the progress on the castle has been inspiring, too!

  20. What a wonderful post! ;O) And what an impressive progress!!! Did I ever tell you before that I totally admire your working speed (and "totally admire" is just another expression for "I soooo wish I would be able to work that fast too and not at my usual snail speed. I swear - if there should be a next life for me I will insist on coming back with healthy arms and hands"... eh... where was I...)

But what I admire the most is not your work speed but the looks of Virgil's cottage! Wonderful choice of papers, the gingham and the decent Paisley together with the trims... beautiful. Perfect for a gentlemouse! And I'm in awe with the floor, what a fantastic colour, so warm and friendly. Virgil is one lucky mouse for sure! And I also like the "PJ" look of the exterior, nevertheless to me being German this is perfect timber framing. ;O) I'm curious to see what you'll be doing with the other walls, well, if it was my task I might wonder about cheese walls but luckily you're not as crazy as me. *LOL*

I've also enjoyed seeing Vera and Virgil so happy about the development of their homes, they are two lucky mouses for sure to have you as their cottage builder. And it made me smile that those two are gaining personality... it's strange that this happens, isn't it? First they are just wool or fabric... cute and lovely for the eye... but at some certain point they get a character. I can tell a tale or two about this process... ;O)

    1. Thank you Birgit! I am so happy that you are happy with the progress and product! And don't you dare change a thing about your process because you and what you create are ~P~E~R~F~E~C~T~! And if anyone should need proof, just look at that extraordinarily stunning aquarium you just created!!! Wowzer it is Awesome!!!

The timber framing was my attempt at giving Virgil's exterior some detail with umph as I had done for Vera with her floral stencil. You Germans know a thing or two about fine engineering and workmanship so you can imagine how pleased I am that you approve!!!

Vera and Virgil really have come alive to me and you would laugh if you knew how close I was to ordering them construction safety helmets to keep them safe and also looking adorable during these building photo ops. I could go crazy with making a life for them and I probably will!!! 😁

  22. Hey Jodi,

It is nice to see that Virgils house is coming along nicely as well. I love the combination of blues. But I am never impartial about hat colour. I simply love blue. :-) Nevertheless, the combination you have chosen ís a good one in my humble opinion. ;-)

For a foundation I would choose bricks on this house. A soft orangy-red would set the blues of quite nicely in contrast. But that may probably not work on Vera's cottage. With the sunny yellows a greyish concrete would fit better I think.

But it is up to you of course, and I have no doubt that you will find the reight solution! I look forward to it. Good luck with the electrics.

    1. Thanks Irene! It is great fun getting to see what two different themes will look like side by side. Makes the decisions easier! It's hard to mess up those great Houseworks floors - after staining with Minwax oil stain pen, leave 24 hours to dry as the varnish is a water based polyurethane. I did four coats, letting each one dry with a very fine sanding sponge in between.
