A Place To Lay Her Head...

A few weeks ago we had a stretch of warm and sunny weather so I took the opportunity to prime a group of furniture pieces for the New Orleans. I had a mix of furniture with different stains and finishes for the bedroom, so painting them was necessary to create a unifying theme. The primer is dark gray but really gave me a nice foundation to paint on. In the top center of the photo is the original piece I had planned to use as the kitchen island. It turned out to be too big and so it has been put back into inventory.

While I had the sewing machine out, I decided to make a reversible bedspread using teal and gold silk fabric. My first try was just a little too short, but the second try was perfect. I was going to insert a piece of aluminum foil in between the fabrics so that I could make the fabric fall nicely, but on the test fit I decided it laid perfectly and did not need it. I left an opening in the bottom of the bedspread in case I ever change my mind and want to make a messy bed. You can't see the opening, as that part tucks behind the footboard. If you look closely at the bedspread, you can see that I used gold thread in the bobbin and teal thread on top to match the fabrics. I was tickled with myself, lol!
I also later made a set of light teal top and bottom sheets for the bed, but the pillows are all no sew.

I used the lighter teal wall color mixed with white chalk paint to make a light blue base coat on the furniture, then used glazing liquid and the darker teal color to apply a glaze coat over the top. Then I highlighted the raised detail with gold gilders paste. In the first photo below you can see the difference in the nightstand after applying the glaze.

I had a Bespaq chair with light pink upholstery for the room. I wanted to try the alcohol ink trick to make it teal. This was an epic fail, but I learned some valuable things. Alcohol ink will dissolve other dry, seemingly permanent alcohol ink. You may think it is a permanent stain on your plastic medicine cup, but the moment another alcohol ink touches it, it dissolves. So my teal ink turned slightly peacock blue. It was really pretty in the cup, so I went ahead and applied it. Big mistake. It may have passed in another setting, but it was just too dark and jarring in this room. I was trying to keep the bedroom fairly monochromatic and serene. Note to self: Clean the medicine cup with isopropyl alcohol or blending solution before using it for another color.

As usual, though, this mistake was an opportunity to have something even better. I carefully deconstructed the upholstery pieces, using heat from my blow dryer to loosen the glue. I used the pieces as patterns to make new pieces from the same gold silk fabric that I used on the bedding. I also carefully sanded the chair's wood structure, then painted and gilded it to match the other bedroom pieces. That was so much better than leaving the walnut stain and the peacock blue. I used twisted cord in teal around the seams to give it some detail. But it still needed a pillow.

I made a couple really simple bolster pillows. I didn't feel like coming back over to my desk to search for the proper way to make one, so I just made something us as I went. Maybe it will inspire or anger you enough to do it a much better way! :O)

I wanted two pillows - one for the bed and one for the chair. I cut two pieces of 3/8" dowel down to 1-1/2". I grabbed some fabric, some batting and some more twisted cord (though later I used tassels instead).

I cut pieces of fabric to cover each of the ends of the dowel. I cut them into circles, glued them on the ends. Once dry, I cut out wedges, then glued the wedges down to the sides.

I cut the batting to 1-1/2" wide x 1-5/8" long. I cut the fabric to 2-3/8" x 2-3/8".

I hemmed 1/4" of one of the long fabric ends with Tacky Glue, then cut off the corners of the top ends.

I centered the batting, then applied a 1/8" bead of glue all around the edges of the fabric, except for the first hemmed bottom edge.

Then I folded the fabric onto the batting, pressed and let dry.

I applied a 1/4" bead of glue to the hemmed bottom, then pressed the dowel into the glue and left it to dry.

I applied a layer of glue onto the rest of the dowel, then rolled it up like a burrito. I had to hold onto the seam for about 45 seconds until the glue had grabbed on it's own. If you roll too tight, the bating will want to squish out the end and you may need to cut it back a bit. If not tight enough, your fabric won't completely cover the dowel. In other words, you may have to play with it a little.

But if you want a quick bolster pillow, it's a great method! I added a gold tassel and some string to make it a little more interesting. And it's a perfect accessory to the chair I almost ruined! I added a couple more tassels to the finials, too.

I printed a rug as large as I could, so about 8" x 10-1/2". I wish I had a printer with a larger capacity for printing rugs, but it is what it is. It's a nice complement to the room's colors, and it was practically free! I also painted some pot metal frames and added art work to them. There's also a mirror above the dresser to catch and toss around the light from the chandelier.

The bedside lamp being an afterthought (facepalm), I just used a battery powered model I had floating in a drawer. No way I was going to try to run a wire through the house at this point! But the lady of the house has all she needs within reach.

If you look closely, behind the closet door, she has an Apple TV to watch. We all love our modern conveniences, even in a home adorned with old things. I think our lady will be thrilled just to finally have a dedicated place to rest her head.

I managed to make and hang some mirrors in the stairway hall. I made a table to hold one of the floral arrangements, too. For now, I am all out of ideas on what else to add to that room, so I'll let it marinate while I contemplate a runner.

I am almost finished, only the back edge trim and the landscape board, plus a few more minor details. Russ and I decided where in the house to display her, and that has spurred another home improvement project for the fall. What it means for me is that I'll get another built in shelf, three more places to display mini projects, and a newly painted living room and entry hall! I am excited about the prospect now, but ask me how I feel about it after I've spent a couple weeks on ladders painting real life walls! :O)

Hope you're all making exciting future plans, as well!

xo xo,
Jodi

  2. Another gorgeous room! I really liked the chair with the dark teal upholstery, but now that I see it in gold with the same finish as the other furniture, it fits the room so perfectly and so much better than the dark teal. Wise choice! I love the way you made the bolster pillows. The room is so serene and elegant. The lady of the house will be thrilled!

... and then I just learned the trick to getting RL renos done... build more minis! Oh, if only I could find time to finish my first house.

You are good at everything. I love the atmosphere in this room, it´s very feminine, delicate, and at the same time chic and luxurious. Love it. I am always impressed by the way you accessorise any room, placing beautiful things in their perfect spot, making them so special, that´s another talent. 1. Yes you can and I am happy to share! I just assume I don't know anything that anyone else doesn't already know. I use this stuff to print my rugs, aprons, towels and any fabric stuff really:

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002201YEC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It comes in regular US printer sized pieces (8.5x11) so fits perfectly in US printers. If you have the A4 sized printer, just search for that size. I use the regular paper setting, but set the print to Best and then increase the ink saturation from 10% - 20% based on the vibrancy I want the colors to be. Usually 10% is enough. Once printed, I let it dry overnight. Then I peel it carefully away from the backing paper and put a thin 1/8" bead of Tacky Glue around the edges to prevent fraying. When dry, I spray with a matte spray sealer like this and let dry a couple hours:

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003W0BZHC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only different thing is if you want frayed ends on rugs, place your glue fray stop line at the edge of where you want the frayed section to be, then just carefully pull the horizontal threads to the glue line. Let me know if you want a tutorial with photos and I will be happy to demonstrate! :O)

  12. I think the teal and gold combination has struck a chord with everyone.... including me. The room is lovely. Please tell me the bed on the diagonal is just to show us all the details of the room - my neat brain can only cope with the bed parallel to something or other like in your first photo. I once sleep (or rather didn't) sleep in a diagonally placed one in a hotel once and it simply messed with my soul. Not to mention i couldn't locate the bathroom in the dark.

Is your primer an actual primer? Do you apply the glaze lightly with a brush to get contrasty aging/shading? Do you apply the gilding with your finger? Why am I not sitting behind you while you do all this???

So..... it is drop dead gorgeous nothing too much or too little and teeny treats like the closet glimpse and various reflections and the nearly hidden TV.

The chair gods were with you with that chair - making you make a 100% better one even when the starting point 'bad' one was just lovely.

Huge congratulations on some beautiful work.

    1. Ha ha! I know what you mean, Marilyn! My left brained side still has strong opinions on having things in proper order, even in a creative environment! The photo that shows the bed against the left wall is the "normal" placement of the furniture. Getting a good fourth wall photo in a dollhouse is always a challenge!

The dark gray is an actual spray primer. The brand is Krylon and I like it's coverage and ease with getting an even application. The next coat is the light teal/chalk paint mixture. Paint, let dry. Then the glaze/dark teal. To mix the glaze, add a little glaze to a cup then slowly add the paint a little at a time. Just a swipe on the furniture will tell you if you need more paint in the mixture. The glaze makes the paint float in it, so it gives you the shading with not much effort. It settles into the cracks like a paint wash, so the effect is lovely. If you want bolder results, use a stiffer brush. For a more subtle look, a soft brush will do.

I am so happy that you like how the room came out and I thank you sincerely for your lovely comments!

  17. Hi, Jodi - This room is another personal favorite! (Could it be that ALL the rooms that you design are my favorites?) I love the luscious color scheme - so elegant, so restful, so serene. The lovely furniture pieces are all perfect for the room, and your transformation of them with the beautiful paintwork is simply magical. I must try my hand (though it isn't nearly as adept as your hand) at making those wonderful bolster pillows; I appreciate your showing your technique in detail. All the accessories, down to the last realistic detail, are well chosen, as always, and fit into the tranquil mood of the room. The rug, with its soft colors, is a work of art, and just exactly right for this room. I read your discussion of printing out the rug, which I appreciate, but I have a question that's so basic I'm almost embarrassed to ask. Where do you find a rug photo to print? Do you search online at a particular site? You may have noticed that I'm extremely low-tech, so I'm sometimes oblivious to the obvious! Anyway, the rug adds the perfect finishing touch to the bedroom and seems to bring all the elements together in a very satisfying way. Congratulations on the completion of another wonderful room!

    1. Hi Marjorie! I am so happy that you like the room's color, furnishings and rug! It was a fun room to do once I had an idea how to unify all of the furniture and fabrics on hand. Sometimes the hardest part is just knowing what to do!
Please never be embarrassed to ask anything - we are all new to aspects of making dollhouses in some aspect or another. I count on learning from everyone each time I try something new!
I generally begin with a Google search using something like "teal and gold area Rug" as the initial criteria. I then click on the Images tag so that I can quickly scan through the images. I look for a photo of a full sized rug with a birds eye perspective and no background. If one looks interesting, I right click the image then Open In New Window to get a better view. I don't bother with anything that is less than 300 x 300 dpi. Sometimes additional similar photos will come up in the new window to click through. To see larger, better photos of any of the rugs, I either right click the View link (to open a new window so I don't lose my page or place) or right click the photo and select Open In A New Window. Once I have found the largest/best photo, I right click and select Save Photo As. I have a folder on my PC that I save good rugs into, and over time have acquired quite a few. As I understand it, the photo is fair game for personal use. If I were selling the rugs, I would need to obtain permission from the photo's owner.
I am so happy to answer questions or lend assistance on anything at any time. Do not hesitate to email me if you need me to be more clear on anything. I think all of us born before the new millennium are struggling just to keep up with all the new tech that comes at us every day!

  20. Now I hear Paul Young singing… "Wherever I lay my head… that's my home" *smile* Okay, it's meant totally different in that song but I bet your lady of the house would totally agree with just this line. How could she not - such a wonderful bedroom where she can lay her head down, have the sweetest dreams, read a good book or enjoy a movie on her tv.

As always I've enjoyed this post very much and watching the pictures was pure pleasure. Once more you've created a very pretty, charming and inviting room, elegant but at the same time cozy. And comparing your arrangements I can only agree that it was a great solution not to place the bed at the wall. It looks so much better if the bed is standing in the room.

And all the details you've added - the pictures at the wall, the table lamp, the lovely self printed rug, the stunning bedding (very clever) and the gorgeous pillows you've made. (Note to self: Never lay my head down on round pillows when in New Orleans... might be too hard for the neck *LOL*) A fantastic room - as the rest of this beautiful house… and not to forget the tempting peep into the dressing room.

And it's great news that this masterpiece will get a special place… offering even more space for other projects. Don't care about the work… focus on the result… and dream about what to place on your new unit for displaying masterpieces. ;O)

  22. WHAT A SPECTACULAR Interior Finale, Jodi!!!
Your New Orleans bedroom is Absolutely Dreamy, yet as Marjorie has said "Could it be that ALL the rooms that you design are my favorites?" ... the answer is a Resounding YES!
But this Romantic French styled bedroom is truly Award Winning. The furniture layout is PERFECT and the furnishing are not only softly discreet but entirely functional AND comfortable looking. Their soft patina and your meticulous accentuation of the carvings in gold, gives the furniture a very "Old Money" look.
The various accessories which you have dressed the bedside table and dresser with are all precisely what most women would wish to have near at hand - BEAUTIFULLY chosen!

I must say, that ONE of the Most Interesting features in this room for me, is the back wall leading onto the balcony. The accent lighting in the triangular alcoves and the subtle contrast of the solid colour walls flanking the patterned paper, solid panelling and white trims is Totally MASTERFUL!
I am BOWLED over by your entire bedroom composition and may I also add that your hall of mirrors is a unique touch too, and works Sooooo Well as it segues into the bedroom!

Between the Comfy Living room and the Divine Bedroom, I don't think that I would ever want to leave either: Looks like you may have me as your permanent house guest Jodi- Nighty Night! ❤️

  24. Dear Jodi, once again I am late to comment, but not for lack of things to appreciate about this House!!! This room is just Awesomely Serene and Opulent without feeling overdone! (How did you manage that???) The epic fail on the chair really caused you to create the perfect complement to the bed and it balances the room in a way any other chair just could not achieve! All the layers of paint and glaze and gilding on the furniture really gives it a soft and aged patina that no amount of commercial paint could accomplish! I really need to try some of your paint techniques... I am stuck back in the Dark Ages... all my old wooden furniture stained and never painted...! LOL! Your bedspread and bolster techniques worked to perfection... silk is such great material to work with! Seriously, this room is just Gorgeous!!! 1. Hi Betsy and thank you for all your lovely and thoughtful comments! It makes me so happy that you like the room! I really like opulence when it's not rubbed on your nose, so the tone on tone colors really help achieve that feeling. When you are able to create magic with paint the way you do, I can't blame you at all for not changing a thing you do! Plus, I still love stained furnishings and a rustic, homey environment, too, so please just keep doing what you beautifully do! I am so new to working with fabrics of any kind, so in all honesty I just liked the colors and the sheen when I bought the bedspread fabric and fortunately, got lucky that it was fairly easy to sew! The closet did not end up working as well as I had hoped, but the mansard ceilings added an additional challenge in placement of the clothing rack so it was the best I could achieve. I can live with that! :O) I am looking forward to a little home refresh, too. It means more mini room and more ideas I'll get to try out in 1:1 scale, too! I am softening Russ up to tackle the family room and kitchen area one day, so if this goes smoothly it will help!
