Fall Already???

Hi Guys! Is it really fall already? It feels like I put my head down to get packages out to my volunteers, and when I looked up, October was well under way! Let me assure you that even though I haven't posted in a few weeks, I've been BUSY! I'll try to catch you up on all the happenings...

In my last post I shared how the packages of  vintage 3D printed kitchen minis were on their way to the volunteer testers. Since then, I have gotten several reviews and photos back and am so excited with the feedback! Here are just a few comments...

"How I wish you could've been here when I opened your package a few minutes ago! I literally gasped and squealed at the array of beautiful items that were enclosed, and marveled at the tiny honey pot and sweet sifter. Thank you for your unexpected "thank you" gifts! They're SO precious!!! I love EVERYTHING that you've sent, and am blown away by the quality of each piece. I would venture to say that they're the best 3D printed items that I've seen so far. Also love that you've left them attached to their little bars/stringers to make painting easier."
Terri K.

"I received the little precious things. I am in love with everything. The colander is just too too good! I am going to finish up a purse I'm working on and then will be devoted to minis. Thanks for this opportunity. One thing I can say now: I purchase quite a few 3-D items to finish. The quality of these is much better. Of course, I will be swearing a lot with the toaster!!!"
Pat S.

"The package arrived today and I will get started on this after my NAME Gazette meeting today at noon. Thank you so much for the presents you sent. They are fantastic and hard to believe they are plastic/resin. After just going through what I got, I would definitely like to have you as a supplier when I finally get my miniature food business kicked off. You have items my other supplier doesn’t (just like she has things you don’t, well, mainly because I had a few custom requests that she filled)."
Marilyn H.

"I was so thrilled when my package of your minis arrived in the mail today! I can't thank you enough! When you see them in the images on your blog, they're fantastic, but when you see them in person, they're just marvelous and so captivating!!!!! I love that tiny honeypot you included, it's just wonderful and oh so cute! And that little sifter! They're amazing! I can't wait to review them, and thank you for making my day!"
Julia T.

I'll share photos I received from the volunteer testers in a future post - it's amazing the range of products that were used and the finishes they've come up with! So inspiring!!! There were some really good suggestions on improvements, too, so after a couple adjustments, I started printing again - this time, for photo shoots. I needed three sets of everything: one for the Willowcrest kitchen to be painted in it's color scheme, one with a more crowd pleasing palette to use for product display photos, and one set right off the printer, lightly sanded but left unpainted so folks will know exactly what they will receive. Honestly, at this point I am still not certain if I will open a shop. There is so much to learn and I need to be sure I can handle the business part. Online retail has gotten very complicated if your gross sales are over $600 per year with the new tax laws. For now, I'm going to "act" like a shop is happening, do all I need to do and learn all I need to know, and then decide.

I've used a two-tone porcelain enamel look on lots of the pieces.

In the garage for spray varnish.

The printed pieces have been painted and sealed, and I am preparing myself for a major photo shoot. To accomplish this, I needed a photo studio. Some of my longtime readers might remember when I made up a Houseworks Duplex Roombox for this purpose way back in 2017. It's finished with a lot of texture but completely neutral in color so that the items being photographed will not have any competition for their attention. I have used it a couple times - once as the backdrop in the post So Thankful, after receiving many gorgeous mini paintings from Samantha Burns and once as the backdrop when I experimented with and then sold a bunch of vanities. That post was called In Sink. Then the structure got shelved and mostly forgotten until now...

I decided that my original idea for it was a good one, and if I planned things just right, I could create several props to use for all kinds of photo shoots in the future. For these vintage kitchen minis, I needed a pretty neutral kitchen to display them in. So, in between all the other things on my plate, I got busy making one. I used Design Space, the Maker and chipboard to custom fit the space in the left side of the shop.

I went with a modern farmhouse style this time because it fit with the vibe of the roombox shop and would provide a pretty neutral backdrop for the 3D printed items. All the pieces will be removable so that I can use the space for other room items besides a kitchen, and have even created many shop type display pieces to use in the future.

I've got to cut the sink opening, add a backsplash to the countertops and then finish them. I think I am leaning toward faux white marble. For the walls, I'm going with modular wooden open shelving - great for displaying all the kitchenware. The banquet will need cushions for the booty and loose pillows for the back. My To-Do list would probably freak out even the most type "A" OCD person, but my strategy is to do all I can, enjoy it as much as possible, and stop caring what the calendar says. It works to keep me from freaking out an acceptable amount of the time. 😁

In family news... We got to stay for a long weekend at Tasha and Brent's farm. They had just gotten eight baby chicks who stayed in the house in their hatcher pen. That allowed lots of fascinating watching time and plenty of holding them so they get used to people. They were so funny and beautiful! Truly just like little children!

I also got to love on Vincent and Carl, the goats. They really like me - probably because I taught them what pumpkins are and fed it to them!

And I got to feed freeze dried worms to the three older hens and the gender confused rooster, Angelica.

It was such an amazing thing to see my little girl and her perfect partner beginning to live their dream!

Thanks for coming by, everyone! I hope in spite of what the calendar says, you're crossing things off your To-Do lists faster than you are adding them!

Back next week with progress...

xo xo,
Jodi

  1. Hi Jodi. All those painted minis look amazing!! I really love how they’ve turned out and the colours are gorgeous. And good work on the new cabinetry for display - that in itself is a big job. It too looks great and will display all your pieces perfectly. And don’t stress about the time of the year or how long it takes to do something. If the time is right to sell, you will, and you’ll tackle the challenges of how or where to sell and the tax accounting issues one by one. For now, just do what you want, take these first steps and if nothing else, you’ll have all these gorgeous accessories to use in your builds! And that itself is pretty awesome.

    1. Thanks Shannon! I'm glad you like them painted! I really love color so it was fun to use so many at one time! The display kitchen was a major curve ball, but I do love making kitchens, so any excuse, right?!? 😜 I am having a lot of fun with this part of the "job", lol!
I am doing my best to fight back that feeling that I "should" be doing 20 other things, and just enjoy all I am learning, the new folks I am meeting, and the creativity I am basking in. I did get my house scrubbed, though, so that feels good! One step at a time for all the business-y stuff. Whew!

  2. Dear Jodi,
Your painted 3d miniatures are awesome!! I love the shelving you made - it's very inspiring!
And I also love the pictures of the animals - they're so adorable! And good luck getting your shop underway!
    Best wishes,

  3. You certainly have been quite busy. Your shop will be so amazing. I truly believe that there is a market out there for the products that you will offer. After seeing the offerings at the San Jose Show, I can confirm that there is niche for 3-D printed blanks that hobbyists can customize. I followed your suggestion and purchased Apple Barrel paints and will get some spray varnish tomorrow then I'll be set to get down to business. I've painted two pieces with the Apple paint and I like it very much. It is smooth and as you said, and thinner. I am still amazed at all the work that you have done and love your enthusiasm and passion for miniature making. As for your daughter's farm life--well it is awesome. The hens and chicks can be a lot of fun and they will have more eggs than they can use! And goats are such characters. Thank you again for the wonderful opportunity that you have given us.

    1. Thanks you, Ann! It is good to hear from folks who shop for minis that there is a need these 3D minis can fill! I am never running out of ideas, so I hope I can fill some needs and be a good resource for our community!
I'm glad you like the paint, too, and can't wait to see what you found at the show! As for my enthusiasm for minis - I can't explain why but they fill me with joy and happiness! I MUST work on them or I get really sad, lol!
Tasha has a wonderful neighbor who has become a great mentor to her. She sells eggs, too, and says she will help Tasha link up with folks who need eggs regularly. If I lived around those farm animals, I'd have to play with them all day long! I just loved them and had so much fun getting to know them! 💗

  5. Isn’t the miniatures community just the best? Those comments are so sweet. The way you have organized this project is not only helpful to you, but to the rest of us as well. I’ve enjoyed following along and watching you create the kitchen sets, paint and finish them and now tailor a display space to photograph them. To me, selling is the least fun part. If you never open a store, you’ve still had a lot to enjoy during the process.

    1. It really is, Sherrill! I am just filled with awe on a weekly basis at their talent and kindness! 💗 I am so happy that you are finding this process helpful! Maybe it will encourage you to share your talents and fill some needs, too! I can't wait to share your ingenious finishing ideas with the community! They will be an inspiration for not just 3D printed minis, but all minis across the board! I truly don't know if I am made of the stuff one needs to have a shop, but I have to try so I can share this joy I have found!!!

  7. Dear Jody, your painted 3D pieces turned out beautiful. It's impossible to believe they are printed plastic. Some look more like Corning ware and ceramics.
I love the room box and shelves units you are preparing for the display. Can see how busy you were.
I also love the goat and chickens in Tasha's farm. She looks so happy. I wish Tasha and Brent good luck and happiness in the life they chose.

    1. Thank you Drora! I am so happy you like the kitchen minis all painted up! I am excited to get to set them up in the display kitchen for photos! Though a bit worn out from all the new responsibilities, Tasha and Brent are really happy to be realizing their dream! Fall and winter should offer them a little respite, or at least have the focus moved indoors where tasks tend to be less physical. New homeownership is a serious commitment, but they are up for the challenge! 💗

  8. What an incredible selection of beautiful products, Jodi! Your products would be such a welcome addition to the mini marketplace and, as to whether you have the ability to open a shop - after following you for several years now I can truly say that I believe you can do absolutely anything you put your mind to and do it extremely well. However the question is more one of whether you really want to do it knowing that it will take away so much time from actually making special little projects, houses, scenes, etc., that you love to do and are so good at. We wouldn't want thee work involved to turn your joy of mini-making into more of a chore. But, if creating multiple items for sale brings you equal joy then certainly - go for it!
I love the box you prepared for phot shoots. A great idea which will add so much to your already great photos. And your visit to your DD's farm? Oh how envious I am! How can you not have a perpetual smile on your face when dealing with animals? What a wonderful time you must have had. Have another wonderful weekend after your busy week. Hugs. - Marilyn D.

    1. Thank you Marilyn! I am so glad to hear your enthusiasm for the minis and it helps my confidence to know you have faith I can handle the business! You have nailed the biggest hesitation: do I want to share my mini time? If I can find the way to limit the responsibility, then yes! Having a little mini income would sure help me to expand my tools and abilities without putting our retirement funds at risk.
Giving new life to the display shop roombox has been fun! I am realizing just how much I love to design and assemble furniture and cabinetry!

  9. From the top most photo of your painted kitchen minis, my favorite one is the toaster. If it was alone in the photo, I bet a lot of people wouldn't believe it's a miniature. I hope you will find a satisfactory solution whether to open a mini shop or not.

  11. I was so excited when they arrived and I brought them to work to show a pal who doesn't do minis but thinks they're just awesome. I really love the modern look of them. And I'm hoping to have time to finish them soon.

I have to tell you, if you decide to do a shop, don't overlook the popularity of your Cricut patterns. Downloadable means you wouldn't have to ship anything and I know I'd pay to have a pre-designed kitchen pattern so all I had to do was assemble and finish it.

I would love to share all my files and patterns with everyone. The biggest obstacle is going to be if I am able to provide instructions that make it enjoyable for folks to assemble them. I will do my best!

  12. I'm not surprised that you received so much wonderful feedback from your (as you still call them) "volunteers" (I still stick to calling them "the very lucky ones" *LOL*). And I really enjoyed to see the parade of your own printies wearing their new coat of pretty colours. It's great that you've chosen so many cheerful colours.

And I really need to thank you for giving me a good smile... It's soooo you to create a photo display while you're still thinking whether to open a shop or not. Well, it's never wrong to be prepared... and to take any opportunity to create a new kitchen. ;O) Personally I think you're doing the right thing, taking step by step and thinking the pros and cons over without any hurry. There's without doubt demand for 3D printies as well made and created as yours - but there's a lot of stuff to deal with when selling and on top it is time consuming. And whether you're going to decide to sell or not... it's all up to you. As far as I am concerned I love to see you pretending you would... my, this display is stuning and it really did not deserve to sit useless on a shelf. *smile*

Thanks for sharing your "farm adventures" with us. It's great to hear that Tasha and Brent are happy in their new home with so many animals around. Even now after you've taught the goats new culinary horizons... ;O)

    1. Thanks Birgit! I am so happy that you like the minis and the colors I chose! I made Tasha a keychain with 7 of the kitchen pieces painted in the vibrant colors, and she gets many compliments wherever she goes. So, I thought these would be the most crowd pleasing colors.

It really is great to have an excuse to build a kitchen and play with minis, and I am so happy to have the roombox waiting for it! All I need now is more time to dedicate to the task!

That is the case for Tasha, too! She has been traveling for work so much this summer that all she desires in the world is more time to be at home enjoying her farm and all the animals! I can't wait to visit again with Carl and Vincent - each time I do I am going to bring a new food that is good for them to try for the first time! They are going to love me the most, lol!

  14. Hi Jodi! Sorry I am soooo late to comment here! This is such a wonderful post! You are really doing an amazing job with your production line of mini kitchen ware! And it all looks so "yummy" in those beautiful colors! I remember your "photo shoot" project and it sure will be useful for photographing these little items if you are going to sell them in a "shop"! I think there is a niche for the blank pieces as others have stated.
As for the family news.... what fun to get to visit with your daughter and her "growing family" of critters! :):) She looks happy indeed, and that is the best gift for a Mom anywhere!! :):)

Getting the photo set ready has been a mini mini project unto itself, but I am really enjoying the unexpected adventure of it!
Tasha and Brent are going to be getting rabbits, soon, but I am afraid to think about their intentions for them. I might do better to not get attached or look them in the eyes, as my "farm mentality" is no where near what it needs to be for that kind of thing. 😧
