Beachside Bungalow - Kitchen Accomplished!

As the title of today's blog post suggests, I have great progress to share! The first time I ever posted about the Beachside Bungalow's kitchen was July 25, 2016. Wow! Doesn't that seem like eons ago?!? We've all been through a lot in the last five years, we've seen our dreams realized and even came up with a few new ones. But even way back then, I had big plans for this tiny kitchen, Although my plans and methods evolved a lot over that time, I am happy to proclaim that the Beachside Bungalow's kitchen is finished! And I just love the results!

I started the weekend by installing the lower cabinets and appliances, then the uppers and the microwave. I ran the wires for the oven, microwave and under cabinet lights out the back of the kitchen wall. From there, they ran down to and through the foundation, under the house and joined the rest of the wiring. When I work on the landscape, I'll disguise the wire bump with a vine that climbs the wall.

A few weeks ago I made Keurig minis, coffee cups and toasters with the 3D printer. This week I made the essential coffee K-Cups to go with them.

I made about three dozen of them, all brands and flavors (even tea) then auditioned a couple different containers to hold them - a basket and a glass canister.

I liked the glass canister better, but it needed a label. I made 3D printed canisters, too, and they also asked for labels. I used water slide decals.

Time to fill up the kitchen! I had collected quite a few things for the Beachside Bungalow project over the years, and although my ideas for the project radically changed, I was able to utilize a lot of it for the kitchen.

Some things (the mixer), I was able to "borrow" from my collection for Pound Cake, and others (bisque dinnerware/serveware), I had in my stash. They just needed painting.

There were still a couple holes to fill on the top of the cupboards, so I made some plants.

When I grew houseplants, my pothos always had yellow and white spots on the leaves, too.

When I thought about what the fridge needed, I looked to my real life fridge. I made a tiny "magnetic" tear away note pad, some beach themed magnets, a couple fun beach signs and then put some extra butcher block chopping boards on top. You might also notice the bamboo shade on the door and the light switch.

Last week I mentioned that I had been working on a faucet for the island. I won't bore you with all of the technical details, I'll just say that this is the best version I have been able to accomplish, so far. But it's still not what I am going to settle for. I will keep trying and let you know when I am able to do better. The fun thing is, the taps actually turn.

Inspiration faucet.

The faucet must be printed in halves then joined later.

Right off the printer before cleaning up.

One of the things I've been saving and was finally able to use was the tiny Alphabet Cone seashell that Tasha brought me back from Belize! I added it to two other tiny shells to embellish this metal candle stick.

Tasha's shell is on the right.

Remember the stools that I 3D printed several weeks ago? They started out very plain, imperfect and utterly unappealing, but after some paint, aging, chair pads and embellishments I LOVE them!

And here is the island all together and in it's place! The ladies are coming by later for a little celebration!

They are going to try out the new appliances by making dinner and enjoying their first gathering in Kairi's long awaited home!

As for me, I still have a lot of work to do! I'll start, most likely, with the upstairs bathroom. Just by installing the toilet and some accessories, the ladies won't need to run to the neighbors house to pee! The powder room, living room and bedroom are left on the list, but I have some exciting ideas that I'm looking forward to trying out!

Hope you like the kitchen and where this five year long journey has brought us to!

xo xo,

Jodi

  6. Good morning. I breezed through the post quickly last night before bed, missing so much. tufted cushions for the stools, a working faucet, carefully concealed wiring. So much to take in. Your 3-D printer certain has widened your range of capabilities, giving you the ability to create the exact look and effect that you want and bringing your imagination to reality. Truly amazing. I am even thinking of redesigning the Manchester kitchen because I have learned so much and while I had a good plan in my mind, it doesn't seem to work as I thought it would. You remain a mentor and inspiration.

    1. Thanks Ann! I am so happy that you like the kitchen! Sometimes our third or fourth ideas turn out to be the perfect one, and I am sure you are going to be glad that you took your time deciding when you end up with your best work! It took me five years and a radical change in plans, but I know I have ended up with a better version because my skills and ideas got better. It makes me so happy to inspire you to create your dream kitchen!

    1. Thanks Drora! Since I used the Elf kitchen that I'd originally intended for this build in the New Orleans, I had to make my own cabinets and appliances. Luckily, I had the Maker and the 3D printer to do them with! It was both challenging and fun, but definitely worth the wait! I'm so glad you like how it came out!

  11. Your kitchen is so inviting; cheerful without going too far. But what I like the most about this project is the level of comfort you show with your 3D printer. Need an accessory? Print it! That’s impressive.

    1. Thanks Sherrill! I am so glad you like the kitchen! Getting the Maker and the 3D printer was my way of providing for myself. Trying to find everything I needed to fill a mini house was expensive, a lot of searching, often disappointing when the items arrived, and I was always disappointed in the level of service after spending so much money with the retailers. Now that our postal service is the way it is, I am even more glad to be self reliant. More often than not self made minis are more realistic, better made and the challenge brings so much fun and satisfaction! I know you feel much the same way!

It's more satisfying to use what I have and customize what I can!

  18. What a wonderful post! ;O) As always I've enjoyed very much to look over your shoulder while you were working your miracles, this time finishing the kitchen unit of Kairi's home. There's so much to admire, so much amazing work and so many stunning details to discover... to make it short: It's wonderful work - and even more so full of inspiring ideas. It's always great to see that you're able to make (almost) everything you need by your own with the help of your trusted machine park... I think those of us who depend like me on buying miniature pieces know a thing or two about measurements being announced in a webshop don't necessarily need be the ones you have in RL. Regarding that this project only offers little space it must have been such a relief that you were able to create your own furniture.

And what always amazes me is the variety of your skills... the realistic lights (I like the camouflage-by-a-climber idea), the friendly colour scheme, the stunning furniture... and of course the abiltiy to decorate a room that it becomes not only beautiful and interesting but most of all realistic and inviting. Everything being needed is there like for example the jar with the spatulas next to the cooking space - however it's never stuffed. And it's those special details like the fridge magnets and the cutting boards being stored on top which makes such a difference in realism and effect. Kairi is a very lucky lady to have you as her interior designer and the result is worth every single day she had to wait. However... as much as I admire the coffee capsules you made for her kitchen... but please tell her to think this over. Coffee beans are so much more eco-friendly... ;O) But without kidding... I can't leave without mentioning that I loved that very special detail with adding Tasha's shell - and that the way your stools came out blew me away. As I always say... there's no need to be afraid of painting plastic. I can honestly say yours look like wood!

    Hugs

    1. Thanks Birgit! I have really turned in the last three years or so to making as much as I can myself. I had that really bad buying experience with an online retailer, and then they started collecting an extra 10% in taxes, and then the quality of the purchased minis was disappointing, then the shipping costs went thru the roof and I just decided to become as self reliant as I could. I found in making my own stuff an added thrill and challenge, and like you said, I could get the exact measurements and scale that I needed.

Thank you for the kind words about my skills. I can look back at each project and see how my skills have improved, especially with lighting and making the cabinets and furniture. I am learning all the time and it is wonderful to know I'll get even better, if my eyesight holds out! I love knowing that I can imagine a thing, look for inspiration photos and come pretty close to making it! It means everything is possible!

I do feel guilty for encouraging disposable products in my mini kitchen. I have a feeling that in a few years I will look back at the K-Cup pods and cringe! Just like how when we were kids we used to just throw our trash and wrappers on the ground! I am so glad we have evolved as a society, but we still really have a long way to go.

I can't tell you how happy I am that those stools came out as well as they did! I was so excited when I finally created a design that printed well, then went together as I intended. Then when I took a realistic look at them, I knew I had a long way to go in learning how to have them v=come out with a better finish. So when I decided to pain them and see, I was so surprised that the paint filled in so many imperfections, and the aging gave them depth and realism that I didn't expect! I really love them now, and feel proud of them!

I am so happy that you like the kitchen, and hope you'll like how the rest of the house comes together! Hugs!

  20. 5 years! suddenly I feel quite relaxed to have only a half finished room in 3 years, myself! :-)

But joking aside, the kitchen has turned out so lovely! I like the colours you have used. The faucet, although not the end result yet, is looking good. It is wonderful to see how much you can do with a 3d printer.

I am enamoured with the bamboo blinds for the kitchendoor. Did you make it out of real bamboo?

The fridge looks great with these magnets and the notepad. So realistic.

My personal favorite in this kitchen, if I hád to choose are the cannisters with the labels 'Salty Sea Air'. They realy make me smile!

It is great ssing the progression in this cottage. keep having fun with Kaira's home.

  21. I wish, I could post sound so I could properly applaud this fabulously wonderful kitchen!!!

Wow Jodi, I have been meaning to get to this post properly, as soon as I had proper time to enjoy it - since if landed in my inbox!! Two shopping sprees (saw your lights over the island bench and realized I needed a different light for the Antique & Used furniture.. and then got to the decals and thought how handy it would be to have some decal paper in my stash..)

Anyway - It is all those little things; coffee pods with proper labels, fridge magnets and note pads, stacks of crockery and well coordinated accessories that makes it so magnificent. I agree with Huibrect: SAlTY SEA AIR - is a strike of genius 😊
As for time... this is yet another proof that all good tings take time - and who is counting anyway?

I am so happy that you like the kitchen portion of the Beachside Bungalow! It's taken quite a while to get here, but I am learning that each project has it's own season.
