Tasha's Kitchen - Nearing The End

No matter how many dollhouse projects I've done over the years, I always seem to forget just how long it takes to make the accessories. It feels like I can have an entire structure built in a week, but as soon as I reach the accessory stage, my progress slows to a crawl. I must remember in my subconscious, somehow, because I always seem to leave myself ample time for projects with a deadline. Since it's only the end of May, and Tasha's official birthday isn't until July 22nd, I think I can keep adding new ideas right up until it's time to wrap. Here's an assortment of what I've been working on, so far...

In keeping with the magnet theme in this project, I decided to make the window cornices attach to the wall with them. I built the basic cornice boxes with a strip of magnets imbedded into the wood supports, and a corresponding strip of wood with magnets to attach to the wall above the window. I made two so that Tasha can have a couple different colors and patterns and change them out as she gets the urge to play.

One version is teal, her favorite color, and the other navy to keep with her original vision of her dream kitchen. I think I've mentioned a time or two how much she loves all things octopi. I hope she's tickled when she sees these!

I added faux corresponding blinds with complementary patterns to the cornices.

Here's the magnetic wood strip that is attached to the wall above the window frame.

And here is each of the cornices in place. These magnets have been so much fun to work with in this project!

I made a wee coat rack shelf to fit between the wet bar and the ovens. There's a couple hooks and a shelf where she can display framed art or kitchen accessories. I made a couple aprons to hang on the shelf, one in teal and one in blue.

I also made her some cookbooks. I got her an Insta Pot pressure cooker for Christmas year before last, along with a book that had tons of recipes. She loves it and uses it all the time. I knew I'd have to make one in mini for her kitchen, too. I bought the Matty Matheson cookbook for my son last fall as a "just because you're awesome" gift. He loved it so much he brought it to Tasha's and they cooked the steak recipe together. She said she'd never cook steak any other way again and ordered the cookbook herself the next day. The other two cookbooks are very science-y, which she will love. She is getting the real life sized Science Of Spice book for her birthday, too. Don't tell! ;O) I made one of them open and with flipping pages that she can use to set up scenes in her kitchen.

Thanks to Megan, I got the courage to put the hydrangeas in a vase with "water". She reminded me about UV resin, and I had forgotten that I had a bottle and the UV flashlight waiting for a turn in my supply drawer! Thanks Megan! This task was done and perfect in minutes, no sweat, no mess, no worries!

Next I made up some linens - these can be placemats and napkins or dish towels and dish cloths depending on how you hem and fold them. I'll let Tasha decide how she wants to utilize them. I also made one more apron that Tasha can wrinkle up and lay on the counter in a cooking scene.

I knew I wanted to include a variety of octopus art that Tasha could display and exchange on the shelves or walls. Once I had them found, saved and printed, I needed several frames.

Once again the 3D printer came to the rescue! I made a variety of sizes and each has a recess in the back so that the art seats inside the frame.

Some are printed on watercolor paper, some on canvas paper, depending on the desired effect. I also put some in bold colored frames, and some in white to let the art be the star.

While I was making some wee plant markers for the herb pots, I decided to make a simple paper towel holder in the extra space. I took the measurements of a simple design from Amazon, then converted them to 1/12th scale.

I painted them in different colors so Tasha would have a variety. I had some cardboard straws in my stash to use as the centers for paper towel rolls, then just had to make them. I cut the cardboard straws into one inch lengths, cut real paper towels into one inch wide strips, glued the "cardboard tube" onto the end of the strip and then carefully rolled them up, securing the end with more glue.

In thinking how best to present the project to Tasha on her birthday, I decided it would be the most fun for her to open the kitchen room box absent of accessories. Then she can open and marvel at all of the wee items individually. She can decide how she wants to set things up in her kitchen, and together we can have an epic mini play date! I can teach her how to grab things with the tweezers I am including, and how to stick them with the mini hold wax I am including, too! I'll definitely get pictures and share them on the blog, and Instagram and Facebook since I won't have to be sneaky anymore.

And in other exciting news, Russ and I were able to get our first shots of the Pfizer vaccine on Mother's Day. They had us drive the car right inside the Tacoma Dome! Now, I have been to one of Tasha's graduations in the dome, RV shows, Monster Truck shows, concerts and even a gun show with my dad. But never did I ever think I'd be driving my car inside to receive a vaccination for a pandemic. May we all live in interesting times, right? Rusty and Woodson even went along to lend their moral support!

We go back for the final dose on May 29th. Two weeks later we'll be celebrating life again with the whole family at a big ol' barbeque! I expect we'll be squeezing each other just a little tighter and a little longer than we ever have before!

Hope life is resuming again, too, for all of you!

xo xo,

Jodi

P.S. I have temporarily turned off most comment access due to being hit on several pages over several days with escort service spam. Hopefully, they will get the hint and slink off to other dark corners of the world. I will turn the comments back on on my next blog post, which may be next week. Life is crazy busy right now and I have not even had time to catch up on everyone's posts myself! Hopefully, this weekend!!!

I will have the first dose of the vaccine in June...

  4. Me parecen perfectos todos los accesorios. Es verdad que se va el tiempo con los sin saber como.
¡Enhorabuena por la vacunación! A ver si nos da un poco de libertad y sobre todo poder reunirnos con la familia.

    1. Thanks Sheila! I hope she enjoys the kitchen!

No ill effects with the first dose, though I hear the second is the one to prep for. Fingers crossed we'll get through it relatively easily!

  6. Your little accessories make the kitchen complete. I learned a lot on how to create paper towels and using magnets to mount window dressing. Love that idea. I purchased some of those little magnets thinking to use them to attach a refrigerator door, but it was way beyond my skill set, but I like the idea of using them to attach other items when you don't want to use glue. Tasha will be thrilled. Because we are"old" people, we received our shots in Jan. 19 and Feb 9. I had a pretty good reaction with the second jab (as the Brits call it), but feel free, safe, and healthy.

    1. Thanks Ann! Keep trying with the magnets each time you have the patience for it. You'll master them in no time! I just use my Dremel with an 1/8th inch bit to countersink the 2mm magnets. It's easy to do when you are using basswood that it thick enough to handle them.

Glad you are all protected from Covid and didn't have too much reaction with the vaccine!

  7. Hi Jodi. You are doing such an amazing job with all those accessories. I really love how the window cornices and blinds look, especially in your photo of one in place. Can’t wait to see the photos of the room with everything arranged in place. Ok, so there is one tiny little thing that is bugging me - and I think your octopus art will help - I think there needs to be just a couple of red things to tie in the red knobs on the hotplate. Otherwise they kind of stick out… Just one of the things my painting teacher drills into us! And great that you got your jab! Can’t imagine when I’ll get one. The vaccine program here is a mess. Take care!

    1. Thanks Shannon! I do want to give Tasha some more accent color options, red and yellow, but want to have the opportunity to gift them in the future. And only if she shows an interest in minis. I don't want to create an obligation for her if she's just really not feeling them. Does that make sense?
I think once the US is pretty well finished with the vaccinations, the rest of the world will follow pretty quickly. The manufacturing can refocus on other countries and the world will see what worked and what didn't in the way we handled it. From what I've seen, Australia has done an amazing job with containment!

  8. Oh these are wonderful Jodi. The fabrics you used for the blinds and matching aprons are a lovely choice, and I'm envious of your ability to make all the tiny accessories with the printer. I'm sure Tasha will be thrilled with everything.😊
    Big hugs,
    X

    1. Thanks X! It is an interesting learning process with the printer and what it's limitations are. I have not found the magic tool or technology yet that solves all the issues! Sure wish there was one, lol!

  9. You're at the fun part! Making all the cute little accessories and decor. What a great idea to attach with magnets to allow redecorating. And your plan to pack the accessories separately sounds like it will make a fun experience for both of you.
Great that you received your first shot and have the second booked. I've had my first jab, but here in Canada they are delaying the second for 15 weeks to enable everyone to get a first dose. Hopefully the supply will ramp up and the second dose will be sooner than scheduled.

    1. Thanks Emjay! Now I am at the point where I have to wait to give it to Tasha. Then we can play with the arranging and accessories! I am going to have to find something to keep me really busy for the next couple months!

  11. The idea of making corresponding blinds is perfect, Jodi, as the use of magnets is too.
Love the coat rack with the cheerful aprons, they can't be missed in a kitchen, just as the cook books.
I'd never heard of this UV Resin, so you do need a UV flashlight for this..? Anyway, the effect of the hydrangeas in water in the vase is fantastic, Jodi.
Making the paintings and the linens which will go into the kitchen are the cherries on the cake, you've really thought of everything. Oh my, your Tasha will be soooo happy with this gorgeosu gift!!

Congrats for getting the first shot of Pfizer vaccine, even on Mother's Day, what a fantastic gift!!
    Hugs, Ilona

    1. Thanks Ilona! It was the perfect Mother's Day gift for it means that I'll get to see all my kids and their friends again! 💗
For the UV resin, you can just leave the item in the sunlight and it will harden. But if you live where I do, you can never count on having any sunlight, lol! So a UV flashlight is a handy tool!

    1. Thanks Carrie! It is so wonderful to begin planning family life again! Now if I can only convince my mom. She had an allergic reaction to her flu shot last year so she is scared to death. I've talked with her and sent articles about all the protocols, but she is stubborn. I finally resorted to begging her to get the vaccine so that she can be with us at the family barbeque in mid June. Hopefully, my prayers will intercede. 💗

  14. Dear Jodi, I don't think there is anybody in blogland who can accessorize as thoroughly and professionally and artistically and beautifully and Quickly as you can!!! When you get going you churn out the items and the variations with a shocking speed! LOL! I would still be dithering about whether the shades should have little pulls on them... that I would have to make actually raise and lower... ! But you know I have a problem with making things "operable"! :) I think the octopus patterns are insanely cute and perfect!!! (How could she not love them completely?) And the way the herbs in the pots on those Beautifully painted trays look... WOW! I want some in my kitchen! LOL! And lets not get started with the aprons... and linen options... her kitchen is going to be the best equipped "play house" imaginable! and I know you haven't even started on the food and the pots and pans! Oh, and the hydrangeas in that cobalt glass jar are just Stunning!!! Well done! And your magnetic solutions to attachments is also a marvel! I need to get a selection of magnets and see what I can do with them!
And last but not least... Hooray for the vaccine!!!! I have had my shots (the second one was way worse reactions) and we are getting my son his second one next week! Life might actually start to feel "normal" again!! And now you can visit with family... Yay oh yay!!! :):):)

    1. Thanks Betsy! It would be so much fun to create working blinds with wee pulls, and you would do an amazing job of it! Oh please make them for the dollmaker's cottage! If I thought Tasha would become as passionate about minis as we are, I would surely have made the effort! I'm still hoping that we'll share the passion someday! She just mentioned the other day again how she'd love for the two of us to attend the Kensington show one day. Be still my heart!!!
I'm happy to know you like the accessories! I have a few pots and pans, and a bunch of fresh fruits and veggies to give her. But I decided to wait for Lara Copper or J. Getzan until she's truly addicted, lol!
I have heard the second shot is worse, so I am going to prepare for feeling badly before we get them this weekend! Glad your son is getting his second, too! Tasha had hers early because she was an essential traveler, but the rest of us will be done and at the two week safety mark by mid June! So excited for the summer!!!

  15. Jodi, has trabajado muchísimo!!

  16. Oh what a wonderful post! ;O) You are the queen of accessoires - and I really admire your ability to create the stuff you need by yourself... with the help of your trusted machine park. Everything so thoughtful, well done and every detail just perfect... even when it comes to changeable designs. What fun Tasha (and you) will have when playtime starts. But there's no way to deny it - you really need to print more of this octopus design because there's no other way for you than covering a tissue box with this! As you will need to have a tissue box at hand when Tasha unpacks this most personal, touching, manifested mother's love gift this needs to have the matching octopus design for sure so go, get your printer started. ;O)

I just love everything about the many things you created - the blinds with the brilliant magnetic attachment method, the miniature versions of the RL cook books, the way the herb trays look now, the octopus art with the stunning frames and so on and so on. But what made me smile the most was the design of the linen you made - turn them to green and you'd have exactly our kitchen fabrics bought at Ikea. *LOL*

Congrats on getting your first shot - it will be so special once you got the second enabling you to come together with your family again. I've been lucky getting my first shot too some days ago - actually it would not have been my term yet but as my Mom is handicapped and I'm caring for her I was in a higher priority group. So happy the both of us are now on our way to protection.

Hugs - and enjoy creating that tissue box (very broad grin)

    1. Thanks Birgit! A tissue box is a great idea, though if I let myself I could overwhelm Tasha with many mini things, lol! I think I am going to stop where I am at and let her tell me what else she needs. I did not show many of the mass produced kitchen things I have for her, nor the fruits and vegetables I have waiting to give her. I will show them after she has opened and arranged them in a scene!

I'm so glad you like the accessories I made for her. It was fun to think of what might be meaningful to her. And it is funny that you have the same patterned towels from Ikea! They must be fashionable and that makes me feel proud to gift them!

I'm glad to know you and your mom are protected, and I hope her health is improving greatly! There's nothing stopping the two of you from having a wonderful spring and summer this year! Hooray!
