Rolled Towels + Tissue Box Tutorial

What did I do with my mini time this week? Well, I made tissue boxes and towels for the vanities. After getting all 36 of those little towels cut, glued and rolled, some of the vanities still needed something. I went online in search of a tissue box pattern, then went to bed that night thinking of a way to make them.

All of the thicker scrapbook paper I have is 12" x 12", and the patterns aren't very modern. I have a book of nice modern prints in 8.5" x 11", but the paper is very thin. So what to do? Aha! I can laminate them together. So while I went through the process of making 14 tissue boxes, I also made a Tissue Box Tutorial. Hope someone else finds it useful!

Since I didn't get any in progress photos of the towel making process (it wasn't very interesting), all I have to share photo-wise in this post are of one of the Finally Completed vanities! Actually, I think now that they are all complete, except for Sam's. I have one more essential bathroom element to make, then it's off to Australia! All that is left then for the other 15 is to take some nice photos and then put them safely away until I decide what to do with them all.

Since my lighting is so challenging, I used the Windows 10 Photos app to play with different filters. I wasn't sure my judgement was the best, so I'll just post all the variations and let you decide.

Are you getting tired of hearing about vanities? Me too! I promise something completely different, soon.

xo xo,
Jodi

    1. Thanks Sheila! Getting the whites not too bright and the blacks not too dark is a huge challenge with my lighting situation. I am determined to learn tho and will keep trying! I am happy you like the tissue boxes and the vanity!

  2. Oh my, those are so cute! The rolled towels are perfect. I would probably do it with a super thin wood because I have some gorgeous tissue box covers from Crate and Barrel that are like that + it looks very modern. I'm loving the vanities, you have so many fun ideas!

    1. I almost made them from wood blocks, and was planning to finish them with a Rub N Buff metallic finish, and would have tried if there were only a few to do. But with 14 I was really looking for the easy way out. The paper, in hindsight, was not so easy! :o) Oh well, craft and learn!

    1. Thanks Elizabeth! And thanks again for the towel tutorial! I enjoy looking at the actual pieces with my naked eye much more than the super mega pixeled photos we take these days. They look much cleaner in person! ;O)

    1. Thanks Marion! It is so easy to find inspiration these days, but such a challenge to try to replicate it in scale. And with so many things to learn and make, so many things can and do go wrong. I am learning so much, patience and practice being chief.

    1. Thanks Alex! I admire the mini folks out there that make things perfect and make it look easy, because mine are neither perfect or easy! But I am happy with the overall aesthetic, though each piece of the puzzle has been a tremendous challenge to get "right"!

  7. Your work is lovely as always. Thank you for your usual generosity in your tutorials. The dressed vanity is just a real piece of eye candy. Have you tried hanging a towel on the towel rail? M

    1. Thanks Marilyn! I am happy to share because sometimes it is hardest just to find help in where to begin, and ideas seem to lead us to other, better ones! I was torn about adding the hanging towels on the towel bars. Maybe I should try a couple just to see if they add or detract?

  10. Hi Jodi! I really Really have to keep reminding myself that the vanity is a mini!!! The accessories are just so wonderful, as is the vanity itself! I adore the vase with the lily and the "water" half-full....! The hand soap dispenser is beyond perfect!!! And the towels and tissues are so real looking.... tucked in next to the drain pipes!!! Your persistence over the last two months has really paid off! You have explored new territory and learned a lot and shared it with us so we have too! (And now we get to learn more about the photos and lighting as well!!!:)) You set such a great example! I can't wait to see where you will lead us next!!!

    1. Thank you Betsy! You are very kind and generous, and it makes me really happy that you enjoyed my efforts! Making so many at once and having so many decisions to make was truly a struggle, but most worthwhile things are, I guess. I really got to test out a bunch of ideas, see what worked and what didn't, so the experience has been genuinely valuable. I am so glad you have been here cheering me on through the process! I would not have stayed focused without all of you!

The rolled towels look luxurious - just the thing to add to the vanities along with all the other perfect pieces. I admire your work so much for the attention to detail and scale; it's really hard to tell that you're working in miniature. I'm looking forward to future posts.

  14. I will never tire of your vanities Jodi! They are wonderful and just getting better with each little accessory you add. :) They really are next level greatness.. I've seen a lot of vanities in my mini travels and yours are so creative and fantastically stylish. I'd be hard pressed to find one half as good in the mini shops.. so excited to get mine into the San Fran! :D

    1. Thank you, Sam! It makes me so happy that you like them, and I hope you will be thrilled when you get yours into the San Fran!
I had a mini (lol) disaster yesterday with one of the last things I am making for you - it tipped over before I noticed, so I shall try again tomorrow. Note to self: stop doing so many things at once! Then, hopefully, I'll be able to share the good news that your vanity and log bed are on their way to you finally! :O)

    2. lol.. whoops! I've had many of those mini disaster moments.. I'm quite clutzy so it's a given. I'm finally having a few days off and hoping to get some more painting in. :D

    3. It is nearly impossible not to be clutsy when working in miniature - we are giants in a small land, after all!
Yeah for getting a few days off! I hope you make some fulfilling progress on whatever project that's been calling to you, and I will keep my fingers crossed for a great post about it!
My paintings should really be the last thing on your priority list! I am good with getting them next Christmas, as it looks like I will not even have an autumn house even started by autumn this year! Where does time fly to?

  15. I swear that first vanity picture had me second guessing whether it was a mini! I think the filter you used added a life-like lighting effect to the scene! I know you are ready to move onto something else but seeing all your vanities makes me want to get to making things for a bathroom. I'll definitely come back for the tutorial. Thanks so much! Beautiful as always!

    1. Thanks Kristine! I am determined to overcome my lighting challenges... someday! Thank goodness part of that is as simple as learning to use the free software that comes with Windows - it can make a big Before and After difference sometimes just changing the settings.
I am excited for you to get to your mini bathroom, too! With your eye and talent, the whole house is going to be amazing! Your works is always so inspiring!
