Vanity Project Ta-Done!

After three months of exploration I am happy to report that 16 of the 29 vanities I had plans for are completed! The other 13 are going to have to wait for a while - I am eager to move on to something else...

There are a lot of photos, and getting them was a real challenge. I have a long way to go in my photography skills, but I'm learning as I go. The doll in the photos is a Heidi Ott. She is 5.5" so you get a better idea of the scale of everything.

Each set has varying components such as sinks and faucets, some purchased and some created. Some units started as barewood washstands and some were various Bespaq bargain basement pieces that I modified and refinished. Four of them, including Sam's, I made up myself from basswood and findings. The accessories include hemp cord baskets with fabric liners, candles on pillars, flowers in vases, soap pumps and rolled towels. Some have drainpipes, some tissue boxes. I learned so much about what works and what is fussy, what to avoid and how to improve. It was an intensive study, but a worthwhile pursuit. What I'll do with them all I am still not sure. For now, they are carefully packaged and stored away in my grandma's art deco hutch.

I am also happy to report that Sam's package is on it's way to the land down under! I can't wait to see photos on her blog when she's got it all set up! It's going to live in the basement tenant's apartment that she created in her San Fran 555. It's a neat project, so if you haven't already, check it out!

What's next? An intensive spring clean is going on here for the next week or so, then back to the New Orleans, I think. Right now, it's just nice to see my workroom all clean and tidy again!

Happy Spring,
Jodi

Rolled Towels + Tissue Box Tutorial

What did I do with my mini time this week? Well, I made tissue boxes and towels for the vanities. After getting all 36 of those little towels cut, glued and rolled, some of the vanities still needed something. I went online in search of a tissue box pattern, then went to bed that night thinking of a way to make them.

All of the thicker scrapbook paper I have is 12" x 12", and the patterns aren't very modern. I have a book of nice modern prints in 8.5" x 11", but the paper is very thin. So what to do? Aha! I can laminate them together. So while I went through the process of making 14 tissue boxes, I also made a Tissue Box Tutorial. Hope someone else finds it useful!

Since I didn't get any in progress photos of the towel making process (it wasn't very interesting), all I have to share photo-wise in this post are of one of the Finally Completed vanities! Actually, I think now that they are all complete, except for Sam's. I have one more essential bathroom element to make, then it's off to Australia! All that is left then for the other 15 is to take some nice photos and then put them safely away until I decide what to do with them all.

Since my lighting is so challenging, I used the Windows 10 Photos app to play with different filters. I wasn't sure my judgement was the best, so I'll just post all the variations and let you decide.

Are you getting tired of hearing about vanities? Me too! I promise something completely different, soon.

Jodi
