I had purchased some outfits from PaolaeSaraMiniature Etsy Shop right after I got my first ball jointed doll. They are really lovely, unfortunately, not all of them fit or looked good on the Zjakazumi doll. But fortunately, they worked perfectly to hang on hangers for the closet! And there were just enough that with the reflection, I think it will create a reasonable impression of a full wardrobe! I think the concept is going to work, though I still have to finalize the optimal placement of all that's inside.

The chair is New Walnut with ivory silk fabric. The reason the set was discounted is because the glue joins where the fabric panels and the wood met were poorly done. I was going to recover them anyway, so this was not a problem. I pulled off the front and back panels and discovered I liked the chair even better without them!
I have always coveted the Bespaq Victorian Balloon chairs but never could justify shelling out $45 each for them. If I were a billionaire, I'd make Warren Buffet jealous of how thrifty I can be! Without the panels, they look surprisingly close! So what to do about the glue residue?
I sanded off the glue with a super fine sanding sponge, being careful not to take the finish off any place except for the very inside. A light sanding removed the glue and left enough of the walnut stain that I was able to match it to the rest of the chair's finish by applying a coat of clear nail polish.
But I wanted something fancier. Using my Krylon gold leafing pen, I carefully painted just the inside edge. I still didn't really think the ivory silk cushion was very interesting, so since I planned on recovering it anyway, I tried an experiment. With alcohol ink! This was the exciting part! Using a soft artists brush, I applied a little at first, and when it looked as though it would work, I applied more liberally. It dries super fast, so not much worry about over soaking. I just love the results!
So much so that I treated the other three chairs to the same makeover! I like them so much better, and what a quick and easy solution to a color problem. The silk even retained it's shimmer! More experimentation will have to be done on different kinds of fabric, but who knew alcohol ink could be used as a fabric dye!
The rest of my progress was not as exciting. I received the replacement porch lights for either side of the balcony. I spent a couple days repainting them in aged bronze like the front porch light. Once I installed them I was able to apply the interior wallpaper over the wires.
I started on the built-ins and door install for the bedroom, and am deciding about the wainscoting design.
In the stairwell hall I finished the door and window trims and am currently working on the wainscoting and finish molding. There's a lot to do in this room with having to finish up the stairs and railing, but I.m chipping away at the To-Do list little by little.
So much to do and so little time! Hope you're all chipping away at your dreams, too!

Jodi
I just love, Love, LOVE your chair makeover, Jodi - they are absolutely fabulous! The peak-a-boo into the closet is even more lovely now there is clothes and other stuff in there.
ReplyDeleteTeal is my favorite of favorite colors so this 50 shades and patterns of teal is a real treat.
Anna x
Thanks Anna! It was such a nice experience making over the chairs, and I am so glad that the Cloud color alcohol ink matched the teal theme! I love teal, as well, and am really liking the feeling it's giving to unify the rooms!
DeleteHello Jodi,
ReplyDeleteHow amazing is that closet. The views through the window and doorway, as well as the reflection in the mirror, are magic. It really brings the house to life. The chair was a great find and you did a terrific job refinishing it. I love that fabric. It is all coming together and the rooms are looking just beautiful.
Big hug
Giac
Thanks Giac! I am so happy that the idea is working out, and it's so much fun to add something special and different to this wonderful (and discontinued) kit!
DeleteWow Jodi, I think you have been chunking away:) I love how the chairs turned out. Much improved! Thank you for sharing the ink tip.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carrie! I hope you get an opportunity to try the ink method, too! I bet the uses are only limited to what we're brave enough to try! I may just have a play with some cotton for the bedding...
DeleteFirst of all, I love what you have for the closet! The view in the mirror is wonderful (particularly that boa!). Second--those chairs!! I never would have thought to try color the fabric with alcohol ink, but they turned out so beautifully. The gold inside the chair back was also inspired. You should be very pleased and proud--great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Deb! I am so happy with the chairs, too! It really elevated them to something much warmer and richer! I am glad the closet idea is coming together and I am finding things to place inside!
DeleteCreo que has hecho un buen trabajo con las transformación de la silla. Muy bonitas.
ReplyDeleteGracias isabel ¡Espero que tengas la oportunidad de experimentar con el método y encuentres tus resultados igual de encantadores!
DeleteAlcohol ink! Genius!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keli! Sometimes we get lucky!
DeleteI second that opinion. So inventive!
DeleteDee (designinminiature.blogspot.com)
Thanks Dee! It's so satisfying when an idea works out even better than you hoped!
DeleteThat alcohol ink experiment couldn't have worked out better! I love how the chairs turned out. And the closet is going to be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheila! It feels great when ideas work out better than we even hoped! I hope the rest of this build will follow suit!
DeleteI LOVE IT ALL!!! And You are a Genius at problem solving, Jodi!
ReplyDeleteIn the past I've use with silk floral dyes, to stain existing upholstery, but that was back in the 90's long before alcohol inks became popular and my results were mediocre compared to yours as the dyes were weak and tended to dry splotchy.
So I absolutely LOVE how the ink on the seat cushion has dried- uniformly without any lines, and how PERFECTLY it matches your decor- BRAVO! AND by removing the seat backs, the beautiful forms of the chairs are allowed to shine so a Very Good Call!
Your walk-in closet is AMAZING and the wallpapers and door surrounds are also PERFECT!
I think that the Wedgewood greens which you are using, give a cool, sophisticated feel to this New Orleans house and will provide a refreshing retreat from their generally hot and humid Louisiana climate.
Keep Chipping Away Jodi, 'cause your work is Wonderful . :D
elizabeth
Thanks Elizabeth! I am so glad you like the closet and the progress toward the final goal! We have a neighborhood here in Seattle called Volunteer Park. The homes surrounding it range from mansions to just really skillfully built "cottages". Russ and I used to walk through the park and surrounding neighborhoods and scheme up ways we might get inside to look at some of our particular favorites. My vision for this project has always been to pay homage to these houses and their incredible moldings and details. Sadly, I lack the skill to do them justice, but Russ "feels me" and where I'm trying to go, so it helps me know I'm on the right track! Your seal of approval also helps me keep going and trying to capture that feeling!
DeleteYour closet looks awesome ! - and thanks for the ebay advice. Keep up the good work. Troy
ReplyDeleteThanks Troy! I will keep trying and hopefully, keep learning as I do!
DeleteIt’s looking great Jodi. The little rack of clothing is so cute, and with the boxes and accessories, I think it’s a food amount of detail to make your closet really interesting. And fortuitous that the chairs worked out so well - the colour is just perfect for the build! Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Shannon! I am happy to have your stamp of approval on the closet and the contents! I was sweating a little wondering how I was going to make tiny fabric look like clothes! I hope your hubs is home and you're enjoying each other this weekend, too!
DeleteAs always enjoying your newest post was a bit of vacation time for the soul - so much to see, so much to admire, so much interesting to note. The decoration stuff for your closet looks great, seems to be the right amount for giving the impression of being filled without donating too many miniatures to it. I love the view through the dormer window and the mirror peek through the door works as you hoped it would. But I have to admit my favorite piece was that darling bag "I love dollhouse miniatures". So cute, is it your own design? Your chair makeover is stunning! The effect after skipping the back seat cushion is impressive, the chair looks better and of course it's so much more individual. Your discovery of a new use for your ink lead to a gorgeous result. It's amazing how well this worked, without any spots or lines… it really looks as if the fabric was bought this way. And needless to say that this wonderful color is perfect for the chairs in this house. I've had an armchair with a similar silk-alike fabric in cream which I've colored green for my herb witch Gertie - believe it or not, I've used watercolors. And they worked fine - but of course I was on the lucky side because for a magical interior stains and spots on an armchair are true Witchy Chic. *LOL* And you've been busy as a bee with your wallpapering, I really admire how fast and straight you're working. It looks fantastic and I'm in awe with the stairways' mix of teal paint and checkered wallpaper.
ReplyDeleteHugs
Birgit (who wishes you loads of fun together with your husband during his days off - especially nice and friendly spring weather)
Thanks Birgit! It was a happy accident that the clothing didn't work for the doll and so I had it to play with! The bag was a gift from DBJ Miniatures, a dollhouse store in California. The other side of the bag is printed with their logo. Sadly, they are no longer in business! I always thought I would save it to use in a dollhouse workshop room box build one day, but it makes the perfect prop for the closet!
DeleteIt seems my flow of luck stayed around long enough for the chair makeovers because I had the trifecta! The idea, the perfect color ink, and an end result I couldn't be happier with! I'll take that kind of luck any time!
Fran from HBS emailed to say that permanent markers can work well on fabrics, as long as you work with a wet edge. It's an interesting idea as is your watercolor idea which I'll be excited to try in a future experiment. I am much more comfortable with "witchy chic" style builds so both may well be perfect!
I'm happy you like the papers and color combinations! I love it when the temperature and warmth of a color scheme is unified, but there are lots of prints and textures to keep your eyes busy!
Russ and I are having such a lovely time, getting more than two days to enjoy each other's company! 💗
DeleteThe wardrobe display is stunning! I love the hanger unit and that it can be seen from the mirror's reflection as well as from the dormer window. The chairs too look fantastic. The alcohol ink treatment worked really good and I love the new color, very elegant and perfectly in style with the place.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Drora
Thank you Drora! I am so glad the concept with the closet seems to be working and that I had the "spare" clothing to use! The chairs are so much more elegant now and I am so excited that the alcohol ink worked so well!
DeleteHi, Jodi - I'm so excited about your closet! I think this is the first closet that I've seen in a miniature house. You've done such a wonderful job of it - the detail in all the furnishing and accessorizing is perfect, and it should all show up well in the glimpses through the door and the mirrors. This is inspiring! I'm also impressed by your makeover of the chairs; don't you just love it when things work out beautifully, even when it isn't what you'd planned? The alcohol ink is amazing; I've never used it before, but now it's on my "To Buy" list! The color you chose is perfect for your color scheme. You'd never dream that these are the same chairs that you started with! I do love makeovers. I hope you and Russ have a special time together during his days off!
ReplyDeleteMarjorie
Thanks Marjorie! It was a lucky streak both with the chairs and the closet items/mirror reflection! Can you believe that Cloud was the only blue ink I had and it just so happened to have that teal feeling? I love that kind of makeover, too! I hope you find your alcohol ink just as useful as mine have been to me on a variety of materials and uses!
DeleteThe time with Russ and the puppies has been soul filling for the whole pack! 💗
The chair reminds me one that I have in my bedroom, a dainty little slipper chair that sat in the old chicken house for so long until my mom finally had it restored. I wish I could replicate it for a miniature room. And the closet! such authentic detail. Again, always, thank you for your kind comments.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann! I am so glad I got the chance to try a closet! And your chair sounds lovely! I hope you can find a way to replicate it for your dollhouse!
DeleteHere is the link to the Miniature group on Face Book. It is specifically for tutorial and "how to" https://www.facebook.com/groups/177539922800814/
DeleteTY! I'll check it out!
DeleteHi Jodi! Your "chipping away" is adding up to a whole pile of lovely details!!! I LOVE the little "I love dollhouse miniatures" shopping bag in the closet! That is the kind of whimsical detail that is just so fun to spot... especially when everything else is looking so "real" that we have to wonder whose closet we are peeping into! :) I also think you made a fantastic discovery with your ink dyed chairs! Who knew it would be so simple to transform the ho-hum fabric? I will try to remember this... I seem to have a few pieces of furniture with unappealing upholstery! Enjoy your weekend with your husband... Time is one of the most precious gifts we have! I will look forward to the next little "chips" because they are always amazing from where I sit! :):)
ReplyDeleteThanks Betsy! It is fun to spot those fun little details, isn't it?!? I am feeling great that the adorable little clothing that had been sitting for so long waiting finally has it's moment to shine! I hope you get that ho-hum furniture out for a play and end up with a swan as I did! The extra days with Russ have been so nice and so needed by both of us! The time we have together has become so precious to us, and that point is hammered home every Monday morning when I have to send him off for the week again. We have started referring to the end of the weekend as "Sad Sunday".
DeleteYour closet is wonderful and so elegant. Now the chairs are perfect for this house.
ReplyDeleteThanks Faby! I am glad you like how things are shaping up! It was nice to have luck on my side this time!
DeleteEverything is in the eye of the details! Love the clothes and the clothes pole. Great idea putting the mirror on the door. Love this area. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteMini huggs,
Conny
Thanks Conny! Sometimes the hardest part is coming up with the plan, right?!? Hope your plans are solidifying for you!
DeleteLove the mirror on the door! So pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brandy!
DeleteWow what a beautiful chair make over!
ReplyDeleteLove to see your house in progress... those wires how to hide them, great tips and tricks!
Have a nice day,
groetjes van Marijke
Thank you Marijke! I'm glad you like the chair and shared experiences!
DeleteI think sneaky glimpses to rooms beyond and inside cupboards and drawers is probably high on my 'what I love about minis' list so your closet is pure joy to me. What a great find - an easy way to dye silk - especially when it is in situ - high five! Marilyn
ReplyDeleteThanks Marilyn! I'd agree about the special little glimpses that make you wonder what else is hidden in the house to make it so close to being just like real life! I hope you find occasion to use the alcohol ink on silk! It was so much fun to have something go right!
DeleteI love the chairs now!
ReplyDeleteThanks De! They are so much warmer and the carving shows up so much better!
