The Storybook Cottage Gets A Bathroom!

As you know from my last post, I was able to get a new set of Phoenix Models appliance kits to try for a better result than my first attempt. The kits are fairly complicated and take many several steps to complete. To help fill the time waiting for paint to dry and cure, and also for several phases of epoxy curing time, I started on the Storybook Cottage's bathroom. It's fun to finally be working on it, because way back in April 2018 when I began bashing this kit, it didn't even have room for one! Let's take a small walk down Memory Lane...

Original kit attic floor configuration.
I had to lower the height of the original kit's floor, add in additional floor pieces, create a shed dormer to allow sufficient head space, and then make a dividing wall with a closing door for privacy. There wasn't even a place or plans for stairs to access the attic space in the original kit design, so I really had my work cut out for me! It's been a long and exciting journey, and I am just tickled to begin seeing my plans come to life!

I started with a Chrysnbon bathroom kit but quickly realized I'd have to modify some pieces. Specifically, the toilet had to be modified because the angle of the ceiling left no room for an overhead wall mounted tank. I decided to make a more modern toilet, and this would fit in just fine with the 1940's era plumbing upgrade. The tank seemed a little out of scale in depth, so I trimmed a little off with my mini table saw. I also gave the new tank configuration a top using a piece of scrap wood.

The modifications continued. I wanted to make the medicine cabinet into one with a "glass" door so that I could display some of the incredibly beautiful perfume bottles and vanity/bath things that Elizabeth made for me. Using one of the toilet tank cut offs, I made a shelf and replaced the mirror from the kit with "glass" using the kit's clear plastic packaging.

Just look at those gorgeous perfume bottles and the bath bead jar!

I spray painted all the kit pieces in stages using Rust-Oleum 2X Painters Touch in Heirloom White and Sweet Pea, then sealed and gave a porcelain finish with Krylon Triple Thick Clear Glaze. It's the worst time of year here to be spray painting, so I had to spray in the garage, then bring the pieces in the house to dry and cure. It was a long process!

I figured it would be hard to get good photos in the tiny bathroom with my giant phone and I was right! So, I had a little play time with the room box for photos before I began the actual installation and decorating process in the cottage's bathroom. Here's everything all together...

Here's the adorable little stool with Elizabeth's incredibly amazing tray loaded with bath essentials!

Here's the modified toilet. I used one of the sink taps cut down and inserted into a drilled hole in the tank for the flusher. I used different taps for the sink. The back is pretty ugly looking, but luckily, it's getting glued to the wall! I was also going to fill and sand the crack where the two halves of the toilet meet, but when I got out my Perfect Plastic Putty it had completely dried and solidified. Bummer, but oh well!

I kept procrastinating ordering the Chrysnbon bathroom accessory kit, which is just as well because all I really missed was the soap holder. So I made my own shabby version using wire form, silicon rubber and paint.

I cut out a 4 x 10 square section as that was the width of my bar of soap and about what I figured I'd need length wise.

I made several attempts to carefully trim away the mesh, but the welds were not very strong. I kept getting down to the last few trims and all my work would disintegrate. So, I pulled out the latex rubber and coated the wire.

Then I cut only the outer edges, leaving a 4 x 4 area at the bottom for the soap tray.

Then I bent the lip, the back, and curled the strap around the tub to get the shape I wanted.

Then I painted a couple coats of pink.

The method needs some practice, but it still looks very cute!

I wanted the sink and the mirror above it to be unique.  I added pink legs to the sink in addition to the pink braces that came with the kit. The mirror is a pot metal frame and I used the kit's chain from the flusher to hang it from a doorknob. I originally had a much more interesting doorknob hanger, but silly me forgot to measure the wall height, and it ended up being too long for the economical ceiling height of the bathroom. I just reassigned it as a towel holder.

I found some fabrics I liked online then combined them to make coordinating bath towels and rugs. Here's a photo of the print sheet, and I'll be happy to share a .pdf with you for the price of an email request. jodihippler (at) gmail (dot) com.

And though it is difficult to get photos inside the bathroom for various reasons, hopefully, I'll do a good enough job to give you the idea what you might see if you saw the cottage in person...

And now prepare yourself for some cuteness overload! A few months back, our dear blogger community member Megan of Megan's Tiny Treasures/CreativeMe asked me to get in touch with her. She wanted to send me one of her incredibly charming mouse teapots for the cottage! This is a very difficult proposition, you see, because she lives in South Africa where the postal service is notoriously unreliable. So, when her husband was heading on a trip to Germany, Megan worked furiously (in spite of her crazy work schedule) to create some handmade minis so they could be mailed from there! This was so lovely of Megan, and just wait 'till you see!!!

Mouse Teapots!!! Look how tiny, how perfect and amazingly detailed! The tail is the handle! The colors are splendid, and you are not seeing double - she sent me six marvelous mousies! She originally learned how to make them via a video tutorial by Christel Jensen and has been perfecting them over the years. She nailed them!

Buttons on cards!!! Yes, Megan even makes tiny buttons and sews them on artfully designed cards! She used to sell these among other things at shows, but sadly reports that interest in miniatures in South Africa has become almost non existent. I am sooo excited about using them on pillows and linens for the cottage!

Tiny, sweet little soaps with the word SOAP embossed on them! I apologize for getting the photo upside down, but they're adorable in any direction! Megan... How on earth did you make letters so small?!?

I know you see the paperclip, but you can not imagine how tiny, delicate thin and detailed these plates and strawberry teapot are! Fluby, I know that you are just now coveting my strawberry teapot, and I can't blame you! It's stupendous! Megan says she struggles with tiny painting. Um, yeah. She's amazing!

Megan has recently begun to cast resin houses, and has sent four of them to me! She paints every tiny detail, and I can tell you they are even lovelier in person! These are going to make such nice decor pieces in the cottage and future projects, and I am so honored that Megan has shared her incredible talents and generosity with me. ~Thank~You~Megan~!!! I will treasure them, and our friendship forever!

I thought I'd be finishing the kitchen first, but life is full of surprises. Some of them are even wonderful! I hope to be back really soon with photos of the new appliances at home in the kitchen. Until then, I hope all your surprises this week are good ones!

xo xo,
Jodi

I ADORE how you have transformed the toilet- It was a Stroke of genius in cutting down the water tank AND the use of the sink tap as a flush handle.
I love the pop of vibrant green in the mirror over the sink and the repeat of it in the leaves of the plant. The color of the floor tiles is PERFECT for tying together all of tints and hues of the fixtures and accessories No matter where you look it is Fresh and Pretty! - (I am close to swooning as I write this!)

    2. Ha ha! Awesome! If my Idol loves my bathroom, I guess I can feel pretty good about it!!!😁😁😁 It makes me feel so great that you LOVE it!
Your bath and perfume gifts are ~P~E~R~F~E~C~T~ for this bathroom, and because you made so many for me I still have some left to adorn the bedroom's dresser! Thank you so much for making and sending them, Elizabeth! They make the room truly special to me!
I can't wait to get to that kitchen, and I imagine the Megan's teapots (and others) will find their way into the rest of the house as well!!!

  3. That is so flipping CUTE!!! All of it. You were very brave cutting the toilet tank like that, but it worked out beautifully. Genius idea to re-use a part of it for a shelf. It was also clever using the silicon rubber on the soap dish. I once tried to make a dish drainer from screen door material and had the same disintegration problem. I wish I had thought of your fix. I also love the slanted cabinet. The whole thing just turned out so adorably. (And I know what you mean about those Phoenix kits taking forever.) The gifts from Megan are priceless. I know they will find good homes among your other treasures.

    1. Thanks Deb! Necessity is the mother of invention and bravery! I would not have attempted to cut the plastic without the power saw - my cut lines are crooked without the guide! I am also glad I found another use for the silicone rubber! Apparently, you can pour it right into a mold and even make molds with it too! Someday! I'm glad you like the bathroom, and Megan's minis are amazing and you will definitely see them in the future!

  4. I love it! I love all the details. I love all those goodies from Elizabeth - the bath bead jar is so amazing! And those mouse teapots -- so cute! I am sorry to hear the mini interest in South Africa is declining, but all her creations are so great! I also can't believe how fast you work - just the the wallpapering and the trim alone looks so complicated to me! I love that slanted cupboard too.

    1. Oh Penelope, I know! You should see them in person! The detail, the labels, each tiny bead and bow and flower are Perfect! I think they are the best minis I have!!! And those mouse teapots! Knowing Megan made them by hand is blowing my mind! They are also perfection!
In terms of working fast... The construction photos were from last April through June, I think. I believe I did the wallpapering and trim work in July, before I started the garden. So really, I have been on the cottage project for about nine months, which is funny because it feels like my baby!!!

Wow Megan's mouse teapots are stunning. Everything she makes is just fantastic. It is really sad that there's no market for these treasures in South Africa.
Enjoy your well deserved new treasures.

  11. I just knew your bathroom would be as enchanting as the rest of the house so far, Jodi. In the Del Prado house I'm busy with, I moved the bathroom from the second floor into the attic and because of the slanting walls, I'm going to have many of the same problems you experienced. Good to find a few tips here for dealing with them ;-). And I am SO going to copy your idea for a soap dish! Writing on the soaps involved sribbling backwards on a piece of clay with a pin to make a negative, then making a mold to press soap-colored clay into. If I can find photos of my process I will post a little tutorial, I'm sure one could use the technique for other things too.
Yup, I'm sure Fluby is green with envy over the strawberry teapot. I will make him his own. Who knows, maybe I will have an opportunity to present it to him in person when I'm in Germany in May.
Thank you for showcasing my miniatures, and for everyone's kind words.

    1. Thank you, Megan! It was a tough little space to figure out, but one of the things I love most about old houses are the quirky little things you have to work around and invent to make a space function. Lord knows we've lived in enough of them over the years!
I am so glad you found some inspiration for the Del Prado bathroom, and having that angled ceiling will give you lots of opportunity to get your creativity working, too! Where there's a will, there's a way!
I love how you made the soaps, and I am sure many of us would be so inspired by a tutorial! The work you do with clay is such a gift, and so many of us would eat up any tips you can share!
Oh that would be so awesome to get the chance to meet Fluby, Birgit, Rosey and all the gang while you're in Germany! I bet Birgit will be a great source of information as well as a trusted friend! Once Fluby sees this strawberry teapot, he'll want to be besties!!!

  21. First of all: Happy New Year! I would even have difficulties to find the right words in German to describe how breathtakingly beautiful this bathroom is!!! Having in mind that back then when you started with this kit you lacked the space for a bathroom it's even more impressive how this turned out. I admire your use of that furniture kit, how you've coloured it, how you've managed to find a place of honor for Elizabeth's treasures, the fabric's design, the soap holder, the lingerie at the hook... oh, I just get I could have make it shorter: I love everything about this room! And I'm in awe with Megan's stunning gifts, this lady is as generous and nice as she is talented. Those mouse teapots are so cute… but I wonder now… how could you ever guess that Fluby would be clinging to my monitor shouting: "What a beautiful strawberry teapot!!! Strawberries… sweet, red, juicy, aromatic strawberries!" I sometimes wonder if it was a good idea to supply him with wings enabling him to flutter around whenever a strawberry is near… *LOL* Now I'm trying to peel off my furry companion from my monitor and start looking forward to see your kitchen kits reloaded and the kitchen again.

  22. Hi, Jodi - It was so interesting to revisit those early "before" photos; your Storybook Cottage has come a long, long way! I'm just in awe of your skillful and creative use of space; you make such amazing use of every fraction of an inch for your delightful nooks and crannies. The gorgeous bathroom is a perfect example of this talent, where you've done wonders in a small space. I love the medicine cabinet transformation, and it's such a perfect setting for Elizabeth's lovely accessories. Congratulations on a successful toilet modification; all the fixtures have turned out beautifully, and I especially like the addition of the striking green mirror! What pizazz! All your personal, special touches in the use of accessories make this room a delight, but I think my favorite is the container of flowers on the windowsill! Every single thing in this Storybook Bathroom is a joy to see - now I can't wait for the next room to be done!

    1. Thank you Marjorie! I am so glad you like the bathroom and all of the modifications and colors! They represent happiness and hope for me and what better emotions to start each day with! I have yet to come across a dollhouse kit that has all the space and character I want so it's become fun to imagine ways to redesign aspects to help them be all they can be. The biggest challenge has been to bring my skills up to the point where I can make the changes I dream about, but I imagine that will all come with time and practice. Oh, and definitely more tools!
Having such beautiful perfume bottles and bathroom accessories from Elizabeth has made the room so much more special than it otherwise could have been! The water pitcher filled with flowers is made by Carmen of Dollhouse Flowers on Etsy and is truly stunning! It was so very kind of Elizabeth to pass them along to me, because they are one of my favorite parts of the whole scene! I am looking forward to some time this week to begin arranging and filling the kitchen and I hope it comes together just as beautifully!

  23. Hi! *waves* here I am, late again to the party. :D I knew this post was here but I've been working and I wanted to have the time to sit and pour over your photos at my leisure coffee in hand on the big screen of my home computer.. not surreptitiously sneaking looks at work on my Iphone. haha.. I knew I would never be satisfied with that, and I was right! What a fabulous girly bathroom you have created my friend. :) I don't know if you've ever seen any of Sarah Richardson's design shows (Canadian interior designer) but your use of colour and patterns reminds me so much of her work. You really have a talent for picking patterns in complementary colours and making them look fabulous together. I mean look at your walls, stripes, floral and paint and it all looks fantastic together! You are so brave and it really pays off. :D Love your floors too.. echoing the kitchen tile was a great idea and they turned out great again. I have to say the paint finishes on your chrysnbon pieces is yet again, precision work. The shine on that bathtub in the photos really does make it look like porcelain. And the pink exterior is divine. Love this bathtub! Great idea to cut down the tank on the toilet, I actually prefer your toilet to the original, the flusher is ingenious! Elisabeth's fabulous bathroom accessories look wonderful in situ. Those Bath beads! Wow! I want to plunder that cabinet in RL.. haha... I love all the little details you've included in the room, like I do in all your rooms... the flowers on the window sill the, little frame hanging from ribbon above the bath, Elisabeth's tray, the tissue box on the toilet and.. ooh la la, the lingerie hanging on the door! :D Love Love Love it all! Now, lets talk about Megan's minis.. Those mouse teapots are so incredibly adorable they make me want to squeal. lol.. The tail as the handle is adorable. Those buttons are going to look great on your linens. I can just imagine how cute they will be. Those little soaps saying "soap" are so cute and the plates look so delicate and detailed, just gorgeous. And how adorable are those little houses. I'm always a sucker for little houses with even littler houses in them so I can't wait to see them in the cottage. Can't wait to see the bedroom, and I'm so glad you have more of Elisabeth's fab accessories to include in there as well.

    1. Hi Sam! I am often late to the party, too, because like you, I want to be in a state of mind to actually dive in and absorb the post and all it's photos and give the artist the real emotion they deserve! And you have made my day with your thoughtful observations and positive feedback so I Thank You so much!!! And I am so happy that you like the bathroom, it's colors, it's patterns and accessories! I have not had the pleasure to see the work of Sarah Richardson but I surely will now! I have always been a fan of Laura Ashley's romantic designs combining florals, stripes, plaids and patterns, all in similar warmth and tone. You could say I'm a sucker for it and have decorated my own real life spaces that way long before I knew it was a thing! :O)
The Chrysnbon fixtures were really challenging to spray paint this time of year here, especially the tub! Having to paint the interior and exterior different colors, and having to apply sealer in between and wait for it to dry thoroughly, sheesh! Patience is not my neutral!!! But having Brae's photos and tips to look at as well as others gave me courage, and I am so happy I tried and that they came out as well as they did!
Elizabeth's bathroom accessories are an absolute treasure and would grace and improve even the shabbiest of spaces and boy have they made my bathroom very special to me! As have Megan's incredible teapots, houses, plates, buttons and soaps! I am so much looking forward to getting to the rest of the rooms and displaying these and other treasures that have made my heartbeat irregular for such a long time! But also knowing I am going to have to get out my sewing machine is giving me a good dose of anxiety!!!

What a charming bathroom. Ìt looks wonderful and is so perfect with the feel of the cottage. It was a lot of work, but it all payed off. the space is great and the finishes are terrific. The toilet tank is perfect and I love the cabinet you built. very clever! The soap holder is a really nice touch. Every detail and accessory is spot on. I love it!
    Big hug
