New Orleans: Second Story's Opening Story

This week had it's share of challenges and frustrations working on the New Orleans dollhouse, but at least there was enough in the positive column that it seems like I made actual progress with my time. And when that happens, it feels like a worthwhile pursuit!

To refamiliarize you with the layout, here is a photo with the labeled rooms.

To give you an idea on size, the bathroom interior measurements are 8" x 10".

The Closet's floor space is 5-1/2" x 8". The door measures around 7" tall, so a standard dollhouse height. I'm actually using the kit's original front door, and you can see by comparing it to the bathroom doorway that it will be significantly less substantial.

Here is the stairwell hall. The door leading from it into the bedroom will match identically to the bathroom door. The hall walking space is about 3-1/4" wide with the overall width of the room being 9-3/16" at the floor.

I had to get everything related to the closet figured out first since it will be in the back corner and will soon be inaccessible. The interior will only be visible through it's door, which I'll leave ajar. I am hoping that with a mirror on the closet door, as well as a floor mirror inside the closet, that through those reflections, you'll be able to see inside and get the feeling of a real closet with clothing, shoes, handbags, chair and hamper. Because you won't see much, I have just painted the interior walls, added wood flooring and baseboard.

Because of the limited wall space both inside and outside the closet, I've made the jambs up myself for a custom fit. After all of the walls and flooring have been permanently installed, I'll fix the closet door in place in the best position for viewing the inside via the mirrors. I am going to have to permanently attach everything inside the closet for lack of access after the walls and roof piece are permanently installed, so before long I'll have to make decisions on all of that

The door's not really that short - just had to leave room for the flooring!
So while working out the closet details, I had to make decisions about the wall coverings and treatments. The bathroom will be all black and white with the same brick type subway tiles in glossy white I used in the kitchen. The bedroom and stair hall will be done in teal tones like the rest of the house, with some type of wainscoting on the lower 3" of the walls.

I had to make paper templates for all these funky angled mansard roof walls. Back in 2012, when I was first getting back into miniatures after my long hiatus, I learned how to do this from this video tutorial by Joann Swanson. That lady has been showing newbies How To for so many years and she is a true Giver and a Treasure! Thank You Joann!

I'll spend my mini time over the next week finishing up the wallpaper and wainscoting, hopefully the flooring, too.

Remember the really huge doorways? Well, there are no such doors that large on the market, so I decided to take a couple of the Houseworks, Victorian Glazed doors in my stash and make those work. First, I replaced the "glass" with 1/16" thick basswood panels to give me a solid door.

To add to the height of the door, I cut 1/4" thick plywood to add to the bottoms of the doors.

I had to add something to the bottom of the jambs and trims to make up for the new door height, so I made a little protruding pediment type thing at the bottoms. I also wanted to match what I'd done to the windows and doors downstairs so made a sort of  door pelmet for the tops with resin architectural pieces. The final height of the doors with the pelmet are 10-1/2".

Dining Room Window

Living Room Window

Door and Sidelight Window

Then, because the Houseworks doors do not come with interior molding, I had to make up my own to try and match for the other sides. Here are all of the parts that make up the two doors and their trims and decorations on all four sides.

I've got them all glued, painted, sanded, painted, sanded and waiting for their final coat so they'll be ready to install on the newly papered and trimmed walls. I hope when all is said and done they look grand and elegant in the rooms!

See you next week with hopefully, another happy chapter in the New Orleans saga!

xo xo,
Jodi

    1. Thanks De! I hope all of them turn out to be good ideas in the end, but until I get everything installed for a look I can't know for sure!

  2. Hi Jodi! It looks like you are making wonderful progress! The closet with the double mirror reflecting view is a great idea! Those "must-be-finished-before-anything-else" parts of a project usually stop me dead in my tracks! I am not good at deciding the "end point" of decor when I am just beginning! I do love the wallpaper you have chosen for the bedroom... it is delicate and dreamy and formal and elegant all at the same time... and I always love blue! :) The new doors look fantastic and will certainly make a statement about the grand scale of these rooms! You have done a great job with extending the originals and making them work with the rest of the house designs! Because I know how good you are at accessorizing mini spaces... I am really looking forward to seeing the rest of the closet all put together!! I am sure you will have some dreamy decor ideas I would never have thought of! It is so satisfying to have things go right and look good too!!! :):)

    1. Thanks you Betsy! It is difficult to know how many clothing on hanger items, shoes, boxes, bags etc. I need to make the peek inside look realistic but not wasteful either, so it will be a play and see situation. I sure hope it works out well! I am glad you like the wallpaper - I had something else in mind but it just wasn't working so had to change my mind and find more! I love blue and teal and sea foam and let's face it - every color so I am glad that my commitment to this scheme is being well received! I am so happy that the door extensions are working and hope my idea for truer to life thresholds work out to so that the doors will still function. Thank you for your confidence in the finishing department - I have a vague idea what I want but the final ideas will be whatever works! I just hope something works!

  3. With all your many trails and frustrations I must say this is coming along beautifully, Jodi. I just love the 'peak' into the closet already - nothing quite as fascinating as a 'glimpse' through a door.
Thanks for including the link to Joann's tutorials. I am certain it will come in very handy.

  4. I love the colors and the wallpapers. The house will be so elegant and pretty. I enjoy Joann's videos, too. I have learned a lot from her, too. I have used her wallpaper template technique for a long time. It works! I am sure that she appreciates your kind compliment. Keep on keeping' on. I am fascinated--and learning, too.

  6. I love half hidden areas and try to add as many as I can to my projects - they decidedly add realism and curiosity. So good not to be able to quite see everywhere. It draws you in and creates a little story in addition to the 'obvious' one of the house. This is certainly an elegant house - I also love over-height doors and ceilings, gives the rooms volume and room to breath!

    1. Me too, Marilyn! I loved your stairs photo in the back hallway in your last build! It was perfectly done and I am sure an art style all it's own! I hope the closet idea works out - It is a tight space in there, and I'll have to get the angle and accessories just right!

  7. Hello Jodi,
I love the mirror on the closet door. It is such a nice touch to be able to see the "hidden" closet space through the reflection. It is such a charming feature for any dollhouse. Once again I love that you added the knee wall to the upper story. It really adds on a lot of usable space. The rooms seem to be a very n ice size and I think the pediments on the doorcases were a stroke of genius. The project is coming along so well. Keep up the inspiring work.

    1. Thanks Giac! I hope the closet idea turns out to be a good one - once I add the overhead lighting in there I'll need to make sure it looks as real and full as possible! I may just need to make more clothing! The rooms definitely have a lot of ceiling height, and I'll need to find a creative way to make it a feature rather than looking like 1/12th furniture in a Barbie sized house. The ceiling trims are also going to be very tricky! Wish I had you here to advise me!

  8. The closet looks like it will be a true hidden treasure! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I love your doors. The embellishments are great and the way you've enlarged them is genius. The bottoms look a little plain to me, maybe that's just the contrast with the tops and the pretty 'carved' wreath.

    1. Me too, Sheila! I need to see exactly where you can see into the room with the mirrors in place so I know where to place the clothing rack and how full it needs to be. I have some "display" clothes, but may need to make more fakes.
It was my instinct to add more to the bottoms of the doors too. I tried them out with a hollow frame, a raised panel and some 3D stickers. I really wanted to love them, but they just stuck out too far and looked like an afterthought, which they were. If I'd planned ahead better, I should have used 1/8" material for the extensions, then added the 1/8" framing on top so that the profile would have been more flush. I am hoping that with all of the other elements going on in the room, they'll look purposely simple and elegant. Fingers crossed!

    1. Thanks Deb! I had quite a few outfits that I had purchased when I got my first jointed doll. They never quite fit right or looked good, so now I have a use for them. Yeah! I don't have to make clothes for the closet myself! Can you tell clothes making is really intimidating to me? Even when they'll be hidden in a closet? I am so relieved that the door extensions worked, and now, if I can get them to be functional, it'll be a real achievement! I'm happy that the colors appeal to you, too! I am sticking pretty closely to my original vision on that!

  15. Hi, Jodi - I LOVE the color scheme and wallpaper choices for these rooms, and I'm especially in love with the bedroom wallpaper! Gorgeous! Your idea for the closet mirrors is excellent; actually, your idea for a closet is excellent - and unusual. I'm very interested to see how you'll decide to "furnish" and accessorize it. The door mirror is beautiful; I'm so glad that it won't be completely hidden. You've done a wonderful job on the tall doors; I'm sure that they will definitely make this a grand and elegant space. I sympathize with the necessity for thinking so far ahead in order to know how - or whether - you can access the closet space. Sometimes those decisions can feel paralyzing, in case some critical bit of forethought has been neglected, but you seem to be meeting the challenge with your usual skillful planning. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the New Orleans Story.

    1. Thank you Marjorie! I am so glad that you like the color scheme and the wallpaper in the bedroom. I originally had one picked out that had some teal but was predominantly soft rose. It just didn't seem right, so I went with the Tiffany Light Blue paper and love it too! I'm crossing my fingers that I can get the closet to give enough of an intriguing peek inside that it's worth using up the clothes and accessories for it! I am relieved that the re-fitted doors are going to work, and if my idea for a lower profile threshold (that still holds the pin) works, I'll feel it was a successful endeavor! Thanks so much for your encouraging comment!

  16. It is always a feast to enjoy a new post from you… I'm sitting here in awe of your work and admire what you're doing / what you've done. Your teal color scheme is such a fantastic choice, it's calm, fresh, elegant, warm, inviting… all in one. And the trimmings and embellishments are always an inspiration - speaking of that… those doors will of course be grand in any way! *smile* Thanks for showing so detailed how you've assembled them. I too must (of course!) join the choir admiring your closet and the mirror idea - the test photo already shows how well this is going to work. I'm already looking forward to see your collection of clothes etc. that's going inside of the closet, I suppose it won't be that easy to decide what and especially how much to put inside. Btw I had to smile about your beautiful bathroom wallpaper with the black roses - I have almost the same one and this very morning (really!) while I was searching for something I had it in my hands reminding me to finally use it some day. *LOL* Mine has the same motif but with a yellowish background, it was dedicated for my witch's retirement home but after Gertie Gumthrop decided to go for a rock wall it's still waiting to be used in a future fantasy project. And now I'll start waiting for another chapter of the second story's story… ;O)

    1. Hi Birgit! Thanks so much for your encouraging comments! I'm glad the teal color scheme appeals to you, as well! It really is a serene and elegant color and complements a variety of accent colors so is easy to plan furnishings and accessories for! I am keeping my fingers crossed that the mirrors give enough of a satisfying look inside the closet that it's worth the planning and materials! It would be such a let down if not!
That's so funny that you had a similar paper on your mind recently! It feels like we are often on the same wavelength in our blog community! A future fantasy project sounds exciting and I can't wait for you to start it! I originally had a more muted gray floral paper with an ivory background slated for the bathroom, but decided to go bold or go home! I do love the paper and think it will be just enough with the white tile and black cabinets. I am excited to see if the ideas turn out to be good ones!

Well, this is coming along at a cracking pace.. but I wouldn't expect anything less than lightening speed from you my dear Jodi! :D I love love love! your wallpaper choices that black and white bathroom is going to be a stunner and that lovely teal floral in the bedroom is swoony. I have images of the prettiest bedroom in my head already. I watched your custom door unfold with amazement. At first I was mumbling uh-oh.. but then you painted it and your vision came to life like magic. You really can see it before it is built and then have the creativity to pull it together.. I would have trashed that door half way through because I don't have the ability to see random bits and imagine what they could be. Thank goodness I have your blog to come to so I can file away all your ideas. lol. I'm excited for the next installment. :D

Oh I hope the furnishings and decor don't disappoint! Aside from a couple pillows, I am strictly using what I bought for this project a couple years ago! If it's not walnut, it's going to have to get painted! Like the kitchen, the bathroom will hopefully be a little more traditional/contemporary in feeling.
It's always a little frightening sharing in progress photos because things really do look like ugly ducklings sometimes before the swan emerges! And ideas are always a crap shoot but since my "use what you have and make it work" policy is in full effect, I have to take the risks! I am so happy to share what works and what doesn't and hopefully help you to go for your creative impulses, too!
